Hey I just wanted to know when we will recieve the letter about dorm rooms and room/suitemates. I thought it was kind of strange that I know my roomates at UPenn (and I'm not even going there anymore [in H off waitlist]), but not Harvard. I find it a little frustrating and funny that I keep getting mail for linen and bath towels with no room assignment. Please shed Some Light

I believe we’re suppose to find out early August.

We find out in late July. So, it’ll be about 20th-30th, I expect. I’m pretty antsy about knowing which dorm and with who I’ll be rooming with! =D

gah I know, it feels like every other person I know (at other colleges) already knows what dorm they’re in, who their roommates are, what classes they’re going to have in the fall. I just want to find out! I can’t go shopping until I figure this out ;)

Last July is comparatively good news. I thought that my daughter was only going to get about 2 weeks notice.

Hey everyone,

Usually you find out in late July/early August, as others have mentioned. In my view, it’s not particularly relevant in terms of shopping, as most rooms are pretty much the same :)

sweetpea09, as far as classes go, you’re welcome to look around at

[Harvard University FAS Registrar’s Office: 2008-2009 FAS Courses of Instruction](http://www.registrar.fas.harvard.edu/fasro/courses/index.jsp?cat=ugrad&subcat=courses)

For classes you’re interested in taking. It’s a GOOD thing that Harvard doesn’t force you to choose classes months in advance, as some other schools do- you have the chance to shop classes for a week before you sign up for them. I can’t count how many classes I thought I’d be interested in taking that I decided against after one week, or how many classes I was unsure of that I quickly learned were perfect for me.

Harvard has an interesting approach to housing. The accept no requests for locations or roommates, and they don’t reassign roommates who don’t get along. Applicants are allowed to offer preferences for the size of housing group in which they’d like to be placed, but there’s no guarantee that those preferences will materialize. Many students and parents will raise an incredible fuss over where they’re going to be housed and with whom. They may not like what they read on the assigned roommate’s Facebook page, or the location of the hall to which they’re assigned. Since Harvard has a no-tolerance policy on housing grievances, I believe they delay their assignments as long as possible in order to minimize them.

I prefer to believe the delay results from Harvard scrutinizing each request, agonizing into the late night every match…

Before I had accepted Harvard’s offer of admission, I specifically asked my admission’s officer if I had problems with my roommate being homophobia would i be allowed to move. She assured me that if that problem came up I would be allowed to switch rooms. My matriculation was contingent upon that being the case.

noshame724: I’ve known students who were able to switch rooms for various reasons, so I’m positive that if there were an issue with your roommates, it would be possible to switch.

Those who are going to Stanford don’t find out who their roommate is until they move in-so Harvard seems quite reasonable.

Yes, but at Stanford they famously DO scrutinize each request and stay up late into the night agonizing about it. Unless things have changed, Stanford devotes more energy to room assignments than any other college, certainly any other college of its size, and it traditionally has one person who personally makes all of the assignments. So cut it a break.

I hate double posts :(

The mailing is July 27th, but I’m sure you all know that by now ;)

sev1991, we get to find out our dorm assignments on the 27th? I got an email telling me that they are wrapping up, and so we need to get info updated by Friday. I assumed that it would be this weekend ;D. Aww, my hops are crushed! haha!

Does anyone know from what dates we get to shop for classes? Is it from September 2nd to a week later, or before then?

I hope I get a dorm with roommates I’ll get along with! I wouldn’t want to have to change rooms or at least try to!

Freshmen study card day (official registration ?) is the 11th if I remember correctly.

@silversuz: I think it says in the same email that the mailing is july 27th - which means we won’t find out 'til about july 29th or later I can’t wait to find out!

I’m not sure about the shopping, either - but I don’t think it’s before then! Yeah, it would be terrible to get a ‘bad roommate’ :/

Oh. Never mind. I realized that the fact that the dorm info was on the 27 is in the email they sent us.

Now I’ll have to re-mark my calendar…;)

Many years ago I asked for a roommate who had experience overseas, and it would be nice if they spoke German. I got a roommate whose Dad was Bengali, Mother was German and the family was currently living in Paris. We got along in other respects too and still keep in touch. My impression is that for the most part they still make as much effort as they did back then.

Funny story. When my son received his dorm assignment and who his roommates would be he immediately went to Facebook to “friend” them. With one of his roommates it came back that they had 3 mutual friends and one of the mutual friends was one of my son’s good friends in HS. And the good friend had been roommates with his new roommate at a music camp across the country from us. Small world.
