Can I bring my own mattress and chair to the dorm room to replace what they supply?

I don’t think you can bring your own mattress (not positive though) but you can bring your own chair.

You should call housing and ask. In general, housing at most colleges won’t have a lot of space to store things like unused mattresses and chairs, or the inclination to manage things like that. So even if they allow you to bring your own items, they may insist that you keep their stuff in your room somewhere. So that is the big question. Is there a storage area somewhere to put any unused furnishings that they supply? Not many dorm rooms have space for extra mattresses. Even if there is, not very aesthetic to have a mattress propped up against a wall. And then it would be prone to get damaged and you’ll have to pay at checkout. Though you may be able to squeeze in an extra chair and keep both chairs if your roommate doesn’t object. Ask them. It’s a good question.

I may be wrong but I thought you couldn’t bring your own mattress in. I thought it was because of fire regulations.

I’ve been part of the move in team and helped people who brought their own mattresses. Not all dorms have storage rooms though, so you may have to keep the dorm mattress in your room.

I’m sure you can but you would want to store your mattress at your house and then you’d have to return it at the end of the year. Sounds easier to buy a foam style topper to put on top of the dorm mattress. My kids did this and no more complaints about crappy dorm mattresses.
