Dorm Closing/Finals Schedule

For the Spring semester, the dorms close at 8PM on May 17, 2014 (Saturday) and the last final exam date is also on May 17th. How did you all handle this especially OOS students? I figure it will have to be a late flight out or staying overnight at a hotel for a flight out on Sunday.

Yeah, this is an annoyance. My advice:

Final exam dates should not shift. The relevant date will be printed in the syllabus for each class at the start of spring term. Many students are able to check out early (actually, you are required to leave after finishing finals but the U will make exceptions for travel reasons).

If there is a final on Saturday it shouldn’t run too late, so catching an afternoon/evening flight out should be no problem.

There should be no trouble finding a place to stay with friends for a day or two before leaving. It would be hard not to have people from the Twin Cities in your social group at the U. Failing that, I guess a hotel would work too.

Looking at the archived schedules, the last Saturday final is scheduled from 4 - 6 PM. I still think it is ridiculous to close the dorms at 8 PM on the last day of finals. I guess I am spoiled with the housing dept. at my older DS’ school; dorms closed the day after the last final which made it easier for the OOS students to leave.

It won’t be an issue once DS moves off-campus :)

I work for housing and usually what happens is they send an e-mail out prior to hall close asking you if you need additional time. You simply respond to the e-mail with how many days you need and why you are staying longer and they usually grant it if you have a final on the last day before closing. And you won’t be alone because this happens every semester.
There may be a 20 something dollar a night fee though but it is charged to your student account so it isn’t a big deal.

I had a final on the last day. I’m out of state and I didn’t start packing until my parents came It wasn’t too hard for me. I also drove, though, as I’m from Chicago. There were some kids from New Jersey and I think their parents flew in with empty suitcases and packed their stuff in the suitcases. Nobody I know had to stay an extra night except the international students.
