Dorm/Computer situation?

Does anyone know what the dorm/computer space situation is like at Stanford?

I ask because I would like to bring my full-tower desktop computer + 22" monitor (I would like to a desktop for rendering) and I don't know how well it would fit into the dorms or if it would be considered obnoxious.

I guess I can scope it out during admit weekend, but it would still be nice to know what I'm working with ahead of time

Thanks

As for dorm size, it really depends on your dorm. Some dorm rooms have more space than others, so it’s a good idea to, when you find out your housing arrangement, look at the floorplans of your dorm online on the housing website. I have yet to see someone with a desktop though, I think almost everybody has a laptop.

Our D is in one of the Wilbur dorms. A desktop would fit on her desk but wouldn’t leave a lot of room for much else. Don’t worry about what other people think. There are lots of obnoxious electronics in some of the rooms.

I’ve seen many with desktops and know a few with ridiculously large towers. They don’t live in plus-sized rooms and it’s fine for them.

The only person I’ve seen with a desktop is my RCC (Residential Computer Consultant) and it’s because he’s super techy and built the monstrosity himself. As a result, he doesn’t have much desk space, but he just uses the top of his dresser as a desk. I have yet to see another student with a desktop, but if that’s what you want to bring you can go ahead. And according to emgamac, don’t worry about it being considered obnoxious. People at Stanford generally have other things to think about. Not to mention that there are some people who have HUGE tvs in their rooms.

Desktops aren’t that rare, and I don’t think space will be a concern unless yours runs on tape. I’d suggest also getting a netbook or something, though, because you’ll probably want to take your computer to class/library/friend’s room.
