re:christmas lights
my mom bought me an electric menorah/chanukkiyah last year and my roommate (not jewish - actually both her parents are mininsters or whatever is the term for her particular sect/denomination) was TOTALLY in love with it (and actually most people who visited my room... gotta love brown college) and ALWAYS turned it on. lol. get yourself something fun to give your room some personality.

haha i have all my shots now. I always go out of the country for vacation so it's required. The Health Department makes sure I get them. :)

i've also become slightly paranoid after my ap bio class. parasitic worms, EW. some go through your skin and you don't even feel them. (i'm currently making a vomit face.) and then my ap bio teacher showed us pictures of every disease that we talked about, whether it was tetanus or STDs.

I got the "wrong" meningitis shot and UVA Health hated me. Oops. There's a 5 and 10 year one, and UVA was saying my 5-year one expired after 2. Goo. I think the tetanus was the worst for me. Menigitis hurt, but not nearly as bad as tetanus. And, menigitus doesn't mean you lose legs or something, but instead, usually death. So, way to go db haha. And, no one really dies of hepatitis...it's like AIDs, they die of complications. But, still....good call again haha.
HPV is the new debate though. I think I'm going to start my series soon. My parents wanted me to at least wait a year or so to make sure it wasn't killing off people, but it seems successful so far, so that excuse is out the window. I hope schools require it soon, though. It's tough, especially at our ages, to ask for it because they automatically assume you're having sex. But, most of us just want to be on the safe side and get it done while we're still young and fresh in our heads. Younger girls it's a bit easier because parents can just be like "well, it's a normal vaccine, ok" and age 5 it is routine to just get em all. However, it's safe to say that one day, all of us will be doing the deed. Why wait until that day to start a CANCER-PREVENTING vaccine? For those reading, if your parents object, remind them that it's a routine vaccine now and that it may or may not one day protect you from something that can easily kill you. It's tough, but do what you think is best. Getting the vaccine doesn't mean you're having, or will have, sex. It just means you're being safe.
I know that was off-topic, but someone should say it. Over in the parents forum they just rant and rave about how their little Julie shouldn't be forced to get it because she's sooo pure and sweet and innocent, or that they're worried they're kid is off being a prostitute because she brought it up. Sad world we live in when kids are shot down for trying to protect themselves...
Oh, and student health sells discounted condoms and they're often given away for free on-grounds at various health thingies. Just fyi...

So what's the deal with poster rules? Do I really need to buy cases to put my posters in to make them nonflamable? Because that is what the UVA housing rules say, but I wasn't sure if they really checked and enforced them.

No one can say that you don't have to follow the fire marshall's rules. But, many people don't follow directions and don't encase their posters and are fine, as long as it's put up after inspections. But I can't endorse such practices ;)

haha thanks for the reply. So when do these inspections usually take place?

They give you advanced warning (like, a week or so in advance, at least), and a second warning in advance if the marshall has to come back. Just keep your ears open.

I got a 5x7 carpet at Wal Mart in C'Ville today for $20. The grounds look great!

talk about shots... my dad actually HAS tetanus! He got it like last year after not keeping his shots up for a while. LOL it was one of like 5 reported cases that year. Doin fine now though.

Yeah, screw covers, I had all my mosters flailing around and no one cared. I don't think the marshall even came in our room. We also had like 2 box fans plugged into one long extension chord.

Haha I was sort of in a similar boat, minus the whole getting tetanus thing. I hadn't had a shot in 11 years though, my doctor was like "um, you need one!".

And yay for lack of fire marshalls this year. It's funny to have to break that habit now

What happens if you arrive on Grounds and you're missing one of the items (but you're covered with insurance in the area)?

haha my mom had never gotten a shot in her life; she grew up in India, and there, everything is optional. ;) So she went back to school to get her PhD, and they had like a "field trip" out of the country so they needed to give their shot records. When the indian doctor comes to my mom, he was like where are your shot records? She was like they burned in a fire. The doctor was like uhh okay, where did you grow up? and she said India. And then he goes you didn't get any, did you? she was like.....no.

so she got a lifetime's worth in 2 weeks before she left. :)

wait, there's no fire marshalls this year?

and does anyone have a recommended amount of clothing to bring? I fear I may have waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy too much after my trip to the mall yesterday. There was a new store and it was like H/M: cheap but amazing. So I went a little overboard haha.

hahahahahahahhahaha

I brought 2 big suitcases of clothes and one of shoes, and they all fit in the new dorm closet. H&M is great...amazingly cheap!

dude I love H&M. Their guys stuff doesn't go on sale nearly as much as it should... but its cheaper to begin with so crazy good sale at like express is about the same cost as H&M normally, lol.

Also, you are probably bringing too much cloths, but think of it this way, with a large enough laundry basket you might not have to wash cloths... ever. I think with breaks and stuff I washed my cloths like 2 times second semester, lol.

another +1 for h&m! Ever since they planted a H&M by where i live, i no longer shop at express. Express is good, well at least their polos and dress shirts but the t-shirts, despite their appealing designs, tend to rip really fast. (Im not even muscular or whatever, i'm a thin asian boy)

what does the majority of the people on campus wear? Are there certain trends that dominate all others? I noticed that while packing over half my clothes are from AF, and wondered if i am going to miss dressing like everyone else in my school :).

lemme tell you what I'm packing/packed. I have about 70 tops, 8 pairs of jeans, 35 shorts/capris/skirts/other bottoms, 7 dresses, 5 sweatshirts, 5 light jackets, 5 cardigans, and a bunch of other stuff (tank tops, leggings, etc.) which doesn't include totes/purses/jewelry/shoes. And that's not even half of the stuff I have at home. BUT, I am proud of myself. I only packed 10 pairs of shoes!!!! :) Birkenstocks, Rainbows, Sperrys, running shoes, boots, 2 pairs of heels, and 3 more sandals. The problem is, even though I have enough stuff on campus, I'll remember something at home and I'll be like dang, I wanted to wear that! It happens all the time. But I suspect I'm a shopaholic. :( That may be the reason why I have so much stuff. But it's alright, because my mom and I are the same size so I shop for two. ;)

pman, a good number of people dress on the preppy side. So your AF stuff will fit right in.

on a side note, AF has gotten so boring. Everything has a big eagle on it, and I love USA but that's too much eagle. I own 5 pieces of AF stuff and they're all jeans. Same with A/F and Hollister. I'm not big into branding as much as others; I like what looks good. If you're into Express and H/M, you might wanna try French Connection (LOVE). Their stuff is really nice, but a little more expensive than H/M. I buy clothes for my brother all the time, so I have some experience with guy's clothing. ;) martin+osa is also nice, but I only go there on big sale days (i.e. Black Friday). It's waaaayyyy expensive to shop everyday.

On another side note, men (not boys) dressed well are just.....droooool....... A nice pair of dark jeans, a collared shirt with a sweater on top, and loafers. And a watch. That's all I ask for. Actually,

Dresses, Sweaters, Blazers and More for Men and Women - Martin + Osa

I ASK FOR THAT GUY.

shoe, vistany, other girls, help me out here. I know canuck is probably like, "As a straight guy, I'm not commenting." ;)

galoisien: if you don't get your shots, you'll have to pay an extra $100 and Health may block you from enrolling in classes. It's EXTREMELY important to get your shots. You have until August 31st to get them all so I would suggest that you call Health, let them know, and make an appointment to get the ones you don't have. Insurance has nothing to do with it. And if UVa takes only that Chickering Health Care crap (the cost of chickering is more than what it costs to insure my whole family), then I'm sure there are more doctors in C-ville that take your insurance. Call your insurance and they can tell you what doctors take their insurance in the area. But again, you NEED to get the required shots before August 31. They're for your health and every else's.

LOL db, interesting post.

i though 'AF' abercrombie was a moose as their logo and 'AE' american eagle was the eagle... unless you refer to abercrombie as A/F (which i guess you are right since its abercrombie AND fitch).

I agree with abercrombie AND american eagle getting so boring. I like abercrombie polos and not their other tops mostly b/c their shirts dont really appeal to me. They say the most random (and perverted) things that i do not feel like sporting. Their polos however... mmm so comfortable. haha

I like French Connection ('' if we talking about the same thing?) but it was banned in my school. All the shirts that said '' on the beach angered my school's supervisors and they decided to discourage us from wearing it, and if we did we would have to turn the shirts inside out.

I never heard of martin+osa but will definitely check it out. Hmm maybe i can bring some trends and styles that are popular in UVa back to NYC and start another band wagon :D.

I am curious to what others will say when they chime in

In my Alderman Rd. double, space is fairly tight, but this is what fits. lemme tell you what I'm packing/packed. About 10 Polos, 10 Ts, 10 collared shirts, 4 pairs of jeans, 5 pairs of khakis, 5 pairs of khaki shorts, 5 pairs of other shorts, 2 sweatshirts, 4 v-neck sweaters, 1 collared sweater, leather jacket, 1 blazer, 1 suit, 2 fleece jackets, 1 heavy Lululemon jacket, 1 light Lululemon Jacket (wonderful clothes, but I'm not sure where the nearest store is), and 1 rain jacket. It was actually beneficial flying with baggage limits and not being able to pack lots of clothes...space really is tight here. As for shoes, a shoe organizer that hangs on the closet door works well. I brought Birkenstocks (x2), Sperrys, Rainbows, white sneakers, green canvas sneakers, running shoes, 3 pairs of flip flops, brown loafers, and black dress shoes. Shoes are what I really cut back on :( I'm planning on checking out Fashion Square Mall tonight to see if they have anything decent, or if I have to drag my behind all the way to Tyson's Corner for good shopping (which is where Martin + Osa is).

pman, I've got plenty of A&F here. And although it really is boring these days, for a plain Polo, it is fine.
