Dorm Insurance???

Anybody have any tips on good companies that offer Dorm Insurance?

I realize that HomeOwners policies cover dorm contents, but unfortunately, it seems that when you submit small claims to those policies they tend to drop you. I don't know if that is symptomatic of the area that I live in or everywhere. But, it's not worth submitting small claims to your Homeowners.

I'm only looking for $3500 worth of coverage for a computer and camera.

thanks,

I would first talk to your home owners insurance provider to see if they have policies/coverage - Student Personal Property Insurance - and do a seperate policy if you can.

If your student is out of state - in a state that your insurer does not write policies - then you will have to contact a provider in that state - near the college. We have to do that for your DD as our insurer does not write policies in that state.

You could also google for this info as well - dorm/renters policies - you will probably find many. I do know that Renters insurance is very reasonable - we pay about $70/year for $10,000 worth - and it includes relocation coverage also. Pretty much coveres everything and good piece of mind.

You may also want to contact the school to see if they have resources as well. On occassion there are agents in the area that specialize in these policies and have good deals - Our agent where my DD is - is an alum of the school - so.......makes alot more sense to me to do the policy there instead of at home - and she can do any needed claim stuff right there - and pay the bill on her own as well lol.

and pay the bill on her own as well lol. ..... good one!

thanks, I'll contact the school on monday and see if they have any resources. I know of too many situations where insurance companies pull the plug even though the broker will "guarantee" that there isn't any problem. So the more distance that I can get from my homeowners policy the better I will feel.

regards.

My DD pays the bill cuz she is 5 blocks from the office - ROFL - and we are 800 miles away - and it is in her name - not ours - sure makes my life alot easier - she goes into renew it and pays at the same time - LOL. You can also usually just call a broker in the college town - it is just alot easier to deal locally than by long distance all the time. Your student will most likely have to go see the broker anyways to sign forms and such also. The whole process takes about 15 minutes too - so not so bad. Once you have it - and she moves/relocates/goes off campus, etc... - you just have to make the changes in the policy - very easy to manage.

In some places - students who go off campus have to get Renters Insurance in order to sign a lease - not so bad.....

What company did you get your dorm insurance from and how much is the deductibles? The rate you got sounds pretty cheap. I found a couple of place that charge about $25 per $1,000 of coverage.

Thanks

DD is thru State Farm I believe - I am not sure of all the particulars - and hers is renters insurance - may be a little different than dorm insurance - but it is very reasonable.

Have you actually spoken to an agent by chance - near the school??
