What are some things that people just don't think are important to buy before they go to campus but then realize that they need?

Thanks!

Being from a very dry state, I overlooked a raincoat. Lots of random rain in Nashville. Just google lists of commonly forgotten items like the poster above. Let us know if you have a question about if something is necessary or not.

Just bring whatever you would normally use at home.

The whole time I was at Vanderbilt I only brought clothes and a TV.

It does rain in Nashville. Bring a pair of shoes that you can wear and not slip on all the staircases to buildings and across the Yards in a good downpour with books on your back. For sons this was light hikers that dry fast and take abuse well. Roommate freshman year was from Southern CA and simply looked at what other people had for weather and placed some online orders in August/September and he was ready. Snows are fun in Nashville so you want to think a little about that as well. A gortex jacket or water repellent topper is not necessary but is a huge help on top of clothes in rain or snow. Also a polartec jacket with windstop is nice in the cold months. Very much a lovely long autumn, a short but real winter and a long lovely spring.

I guessing following what faline2 posted…What are Nashville winters like? How often does it snow/how deep?
The snow doesn’t get to the point where class is canceled right?
Should I pack snow boots?

The most snow you’ll ever see is 2-3 inches. It barely snowed last winter; however, the previous two winters it snowed several times. Classes were not cancelled by the university, although specific professors may have cancelled class due to snow. In my opinion, a good fleece is all you’ll really need to survive the short Nashville winters (December to early February).

As long as you have shoes that snow won’t seep into you’re fine. Aka something other than tennis shoes/sperrys.

Vanderbilt is infamous for never cancelling classes. A couple inches of snow is probably the most you will see.
