Essentials for Fall

Hey guys,
New Vandy admit, will be there Fall 09. Any tips on helpful things to have for campus? Thanks!

My D really appreciated having a refrigerator & microwave in her room.

Agree with the fridge and micro. A floor lamp came in really handy, in addition to a desk lamp - the lighting in the room wasn’t great.

Beer and Liquor if they want to be floor favorites!

Personal printer
Small plastic box to store first aid things in-pain relievers, band aids, cold medicine, etc

2 pairs of flip-flops, shower caddy, hangers, 2 flash drives

umbrella!!

That was definitely one of the things my daughter used a LOT!

This is really helpful actually, please keep them coming!

Check on the overdoor hooks and towel holder. When I pulled out an old (my college days) overdoor hanger from our unfinished storage to ask one of the kids if they could use it, I was told no, that it was a forbidden item as it could scratch the door. Vanderbilt is not afraid to charge students for damage to the room for things like that. My kids never had a chance to live in The Commons, so I’m not sure if the rules are different/more lenient.

Are the dorm rooms carpeted or are they tile/linoleum? I assume that regardless of the type of floor, students will need to be able to either sweep/Swiffer or vaccuum their own rooms?
Should student consider bringing a small floor rug regardless?

For those of you who live near a Publix grocery/pharmacy, if you have a prescription from your doctor for certain antibiotics, some of them are free! Might want to stock up on some of those before sending your child off to school.

Does anyone know if you can use an Apple time capsule for wireless printing and such? Or would that fall under routers?

my tiny quirky tip is send each student with one full size microfiber towel…they dry fast as lightening even if they are not plush…and if your kid is taking 2 showers a day re sports etc or intermurals or whatever…the towels never dry fast enough…my son at Duke and his roommate really liked theirs…there is usually not much “hang to dry” room in a dorm. My Vandy freshman will be taking one

To hopeforfreeride, some of the rooms in the Commons are carpeted (the older dorms). If you go to the housing website, it should tell you for each dorm, what you’ll find in the room - that includes carpeting or linoleum. I’m not sure, but there might have been some sort of vacuum available on the floor.

Rainboots - a lot of girls I know got them at Target. Living on the Commons means you do a good amount of walking each day, and walking to class in the rain is not nearly as bad if you’ve got boots.

What is the overall consensus on microwaves? I see very little point in having one in the dorm… we’ve got a required four meal/day plan at Vandy, lol, so I highly doubt I’m gonna be whipping up stuff in the microwave in the first place. Plus I’m thinking the only thing I use a microwave for is heating up water for hot tea?

My D would have been lost without her microwave & fridge - even with the required meal plan. She didn’t go to all meals - and she sure liked having the rollover money available for eating at area restaurants!

If you read very carefully, in some places it says that there are 3 meals a day. Other places it mentions that there are 4 meal periods per day. I think the intent is to really just provide 3 meals a day and you choose 3 out of the 4 meal periods in a 24 hour day. It is kind of misleading. Also, on Sunday morning the Commons cafeteria doesn’t open until 11 am!
