Dorm Life

most people just have their own microwave and fridge. and no not really, i never felt crowed at all in parkside. since the suites are split in half you only ever have 6-8 people on either side, which really isnt much at all. i think you would be surprised. you may be putting more on the fridge than you think. you could easily get you own but at the most, youll only store drinks and maybe a couple frozen dinners in there. i found myself putting cokes, coffee creamer, and the occasional 6-pack when i made a trip to bevmo.
in the end though its totally up to you. of course im bias towards parkside but youre going to have a great experience no matter what. i just always felt that the area of parkside was always the nicest since there arent as many buildings. a little less hustle and bustle.

One of the reasons why I picked Parkside was because there weren’t so many buildings. When I went to the school for a dorm tour I only saw parkside and the Q building, and the people inside were actually pretty rude but I think it’s just because it was the quiet building and we were noisy. But besides that building, I liked the open walkways around the area and that you didn’t feel so cramped. Also, a lot of people I know chose Hillside because its closer to campus and they were so against parkside because of the distance, but it looks like the walk would only be an extra few minutes. I chose parkside K this year, and I am very excited!

@Elitetoast: how are the floors split up gender wise? could you have the opposite gender next door, other side of the hall, or opposite side of the floor?

just going to say, there were some really ****ing weird people in Q last year.

Normally youll have an equal number of suites for each gender in each floor. If we say for example, that there are 4 suites per floor (counting each side of the bathroom as a single suite). then youll have 2 guys and 2 girls suites per floor. Also, more than likely the opposite gender is across from you. its pretty nice actually, you get a really nice mix of friends.

My advice, get to know people right away, dont stay in your room once you get there, walk around and meet people, go to the building events and youll soon form a group of friends. Thats what me and my friends did and were all getting in the same suite this year.

What are some essentials that is needed for dorms and what is allowed and what isn’t? Cani take a mini fridge a tv my Xbox? Will I be able to hook it up to the Internet?

As far as essentials go its for the most part common sense. Anything you would need to live on a day to day basis you bring. Everything else is up to you. For me, half my room had my triathlon stuff inside so it also has to do with what makes your living comfortable. As far as what not to bring, just ask yourself if you will really need that item. And yes you can bring a minifridge and your xbox and youll have an internet connection as well. My advice done rent a minifridge from those people that housing is associated with. Way too expensive.

@EliteToast Can you tell me how I get internet? O.o If there is no wifi, what do I need to buy in order to get internet in my dorm?? I know you mentioned it awhile back, but what’s the specific name?

for wifi, i went on to monoprice.com and bought this: [For only $19.59 each when QTY 50+ purchased - Wireless 802.11N Router w/ WPS & WISP Function (300Mbps)](http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=105&cp_id=10521&cs_id=1052102&p_id=8070&seq=1&format=2)

this is what the tech guy recommended and it worked fairly well. but you dont need one of these. the router is purely for convenience. you can directly connect anything via an Ethernet cable.

I’m a transfer that’s looking for on campus housing, and know that freshmen are forced to live on campus, so would that mean I’d have to room with a freshman?

I mean I’m not complaining about sharing floors with freshmen girls, but if I’m the only upperclassmen on an entire floor, I’d be majorly disappointed. Freshmen guys would annoy me with their immature antics moving away from their parent’s house for the first time.

I’m a transfer and thought the same thing. I found a really good roommate on the website finder profile thing but she was waitlisted so they deleted her from the room and paired me with a freshman, and I’m in Parkside.

eh dont put too much thought into it guys. I was a transfer as well, and I was rooming with another transfer. However, the rest of my suite were all freshman and they were all great people who i became really close with. I think the best thing for you guys to do is to not go in with the mindset that they are all going to be immature. If you do that, you may push them away as friends which is no good. I mean honestly, as transfers im going to go out on a limb here and guess that you guys are moving away for the first time as well.

TL:DR your going to have a great time this year no matter what.

@EliteToast Would an Apple Time Capsule work? It says it’s a Wi-Fi Hard Drive…

And yes, not all freshmen are immature Dx I picked a 20 yr old roommate since there was no one my age on the first floor and I didn’t want second floor. I didn’t think it would matter too much, but now that I think about it, it’s a little troubling >3<

not too familiar with the apple time capsule, thats a good question for housing but i assume it would work. worst case scenario, just bring an Ethernet cable and use that till you get what you need.

Dont worry about roomming with someone older. Truth is were all in the same situation living together. the only difference is that you roommate will be at a different stage in their college career as opposed to you. im sure you guys will get along just fine.

when is the move in date??

should be 8/24

excited to move in on saturday! hope the ra’s are laid back too!

Do you know what the check in process is like? Or how long it might take? When you arrive at parking lot 14C do you just show them your id, give them your copy of meningitis vaccination and leave?

pretty much thats how it works. you check in and then head to your building and your RA will take you to your room.

Okay thanks! So I wont get in trouble if I come a couple hours before my check in time? I called the housing office and the person got all fussy about it but when I emailed them they said it was okay…
