Dorm questions for the current students

  1. Do you guys need to move out in the summer? If you do, where do you store your belongs? Or just throw some furniture away?
  2. Do you need to pick roommate once a year?
  3. For those in Weinberg school, which dorm will be convenient for classes?

Thanks

  1. It really depends on what sort of classes you’d be taking at Northwestern. For STEM majors in Weinberg, North campus would be more convenient; for humanities and social sciences and the like, South campus. Some introductory humanities and social sciences classes do take place on North campus (read: in Tech) though.

As an aside, I’d suggest choosing a place on campus by fit with the culture, not necessarily by proximity to classes. Yes, it does get cold in the winter and walking isn’t that fun, but I think that having an optimal time at your new “home” is more important than walking an extra five minutes to get there.

  1. yes we move out over the summer. NU offers summer housing (for additional $) but you still have to move your stuff because most residential buildings close in the summer. There are multiple options for storage in Evanston, including some that will pickup and deliver your things straight to your dorm or apartment the following year. This may or may not be costly depending on what you are storing.

  2. Every year you have the option to either live in a single or double room (if you are living on campus). If you are in a double, you have the option to choose a roommate or let the university give you a random one (I’d recommend trying to find sm1 through Facebook who is at least similar in some aspects). I have heard stories of people who were not assigned random roommates and ended up with a double room all to themselves, but that’s not likely! Also, I should mention that there are a few triple rooms on campus, and that one dorm (kemper) has suites which work a little differently.

  3. Weinberg students can have classes all over campus so I recommend just trying to find a dorm that you think you’ll fit in with. I personally enjoy south campus and the proximity to downtown Evanston, but that’s just me. You can find more info on the dorms and their general cultures online.

Thank you guys!
