Hi Im enrolling into the business school and was just wondering if anyone had recommendations for dorms. I appreciate the scenery at Boulder but I also plan to do a lot of studying. Any ideas?

The best dorms are considered around Farrand Field. Those include Libby, Baker, and Farrand Hall. Also Sewall but that is further away. Since you are in Business you can pretty much apply to any of those. Some of them have RAP’s in them, you will have to check each dorm for their requirements, some of them require you to be in the RAP and others do not. The RAP costs extra but it is well worth it. You get to take a course in your dorm each semester, and any activity in the dorm is paid for. My son lived in Baker Hall this year and he loved the location, and he got to do a lot of fun activities like hiking up to 14,000 feet, rock climbing, etc. The dorm around Farrand Field are the most popular and they fill up fast. They are all centrally located on campus. He mostly studied in the libraries but also studied in his dorm at times also…

alright thanks. For some reason I cant find the page to apply for housing on my account…

At this point, it really doesn’t matter as you will end up in Williams Village, which actually sounds like a good fit for you.

Hmmm… Ive heard bad stories about it. Is there a reason why it’d be a good fit?

The dorms on the main campus can be quite loud as there are many freshman there that think that college is a big party (they don’t last long, but long enough to make you wish you had more privacy). Williams village seems to have a quiter group of people, since most of the more social freshman want to be in the thick of things (read: on the main campus). One of the dorms at Willy is substance free which you can interpret as marijuana and alcohol free, as most college students don’t smoke tabacco. You might want that one from what you have said. The main reason people don’t like Willy is because of the off campus location. It puts a cramp on your social life, but if your not interested in that part of college, Willy may be a good choice. Last, most freshman move off campus anyway in their sophomore year due to a) lack of privacy and b) lack of space. At Willy you have a little more of both while living in a mandatory for freshman dorm room. If your serious about college, Willy is not a bad choice, you just have to get use to riding your bike or taking the bus in your freshman year instead of your sophomore or upperclass years.

P.S. you get a great view of Boulder/Mts from the Willy towers, and one final point. It’s great to go to a party in someone else’s dorm and when you want to leave (or not) you can go back to your own dorm and get some sleep without being kept awake by the party…

Just want to point out that “substance free” at Darley North in Williams Village only means that the agreement is that the dorm residents won’t imbibe IN the dorm. They are free to ingest said substances away from the dorm and come back in an affected state, which they do from time to time. Additionally, because most people prefer the Main Campus dorms, those who are assigned the substance free dorm aren’t necessarily happy about being there, and some of them DO party in that dorm, sometimes to the point where they get kicked out for violating the dorm rules. I had one kid in Darley North and one in Farrand, and the only reason my oldest ended up in WillVille was that she had some other attractive admission options and didn’t decide until the last minute where she was going. Our son knew he always wanted to go to CU-Boulder, so that was the only place he applied and he put in his housing request the very first hour you could! ;)

That being said, the dorms at WillVille (never ever heard it called “Willy” by anyone; after having kids go there for over five years now) are newer and have air conditioning and sinks in the rooms. Some even have private baths, or you only share with a couple folks instead of having to go down the hall.

However, relax and have fun at CU; you’ll make friends no matter where you live. I would put in a request for a Main Campus dorm as first choice, but if you don’t get it, I wouldn’t stress over it. There are lots of ways to meet people.
