Dorm Room Items?

Okay.. I'm planning on going away next year and I want to create a list of dorm room essentials/luxuries. The main item I'm confused on is my TV. Can I fit a 27" TV into a standard double dorm room? What is the recommended TV size? Will I wind up not watching any tv lol?

Dorm Room Essentials:
Flip Flops
Quarters
New PC
Mini Fridge
Pillows
Lighting
Duct Tape
TV
MP3 Player

Feel free to add more to the list.

ammonium nitrate
nunchucks
samurai sword
egyptian throwing knives
and a poisonous pet tarangula

First of all, I really wouldn't worry about this until the summer...what you 'need' (read: want) will depend on how big your dorm room is and how many roommates you have. Also, the bottom line is, regardless of how much fun it is to buy a lot of crazy crap and feel as-prepared-as-possible for your freshman year, the reality is that you will need much less than you aniticipate. And you won't really know your true needs until you've lived there for a month or so.

That said, here are some [debatably extraneous] items that I came prepared with, and have found to come in handy/be fun:
--roll of stamps
--extra battery for laptop
--small printer (real nice when the networked printers break down)
--running gear (gotta keep those pounds off!)
--photo scrapbook of HS/family memories
--a good dictionary
--3-hole punch (if that's how you like to organize your papers)
--lots of underwear/socks (like, an inordinate amount)
--coffee maker
--stapler
--posters
--lots of other fun stuff

Like I said, don't feel compelled to get everything that might possibly come in handy; you will probably end up with too much stuff for the amount of space you have.

But I'll say this: coming fully prepared gave me one less thing to worry about during those hectic first few weeks.

"--lots of underwear/socks (like, an inordinate amount)"

I agree, you dont want to be doing laundry every weekend. Also keeps you from wearing your undies inside out in case you did forget to do laundry :o

Anyways, essentials to me are:

TV, PC, Fridge and Microwave, Alarm Clock, pillows, sheets. Dont forget the bangin' stereo either. Oh yeah, and plenty of clothes, but that goes without saying ;)

A huge number of the things my daughter took to Yale with her ended up being in the way and she sent them home again. Dorm rooms are VERY small and one gets tired of tripping over things. Her roommate's mother went berserk buying stuff and filled every nook and cranny. Awful.

if you have a lap top, that can save a ton of space... Then you don't need a dictionary when you've got www.m-w.com!

Get a comforter with a duvet... the comforter itself might be too big for the washing machine at your school (that's wat happened to mine) so get one with a duvet and u can just wash the duvet cover... :) also check to see how big ur dorm is and wat your school provides...

It may seem weird, but you don't need a TV. I have one, and I hardly ever watch it. Most dorms have common areas where they have a TV, and you can watch it there with more people. Also, other people on the hall will bring TVs, so you can chill in their rooms too.

If you are going to bring a TV, though, don't forget a DVD player.

I am so excited to go dorm room shopping and remodel my tiny dorm room!!!!

i think you're thinking way too early about this, but here are some important things to me looks around room

laptop
good speakers
laptop accessories (CDRs, flash drive, notebook lock, etc)
printer
phone
pictures
posters/decorations
Brita water filter
coffee pot
reference books
clothes
school supplies (notebooks, pens, etc)
nalgene
alarm clocks (i have 4 and still don't wake up, blah)
floor lamp
desk lamp
something to put your toileties in
extension cords/surge suppressors
flashlight
batteries (recharagable are best)
simple set of silverware/plasticware. or liberate some from the dining hall.
mirror
dry erase board
cork board w/pins
first aid kit

my d. definitely did not want a tv in her dorm room. lots of dvds, yes, as those could be played on her laptop. when we dropped her off for her freshman year, they were unboxing a big screen tv in the dorm common room. if she ever finds time to watch it is a communal experience with friends but mostly she has cured her tv addiction at college.

Yeah, I have a TV in my room but I watch it very infrequently because I don't want to be anti-social. The point of college is to be out and about. Nevertheless, it never hurts to have it just in case you're bored or if you have friends over.

i haven't watched a tv (for other than a football game or a dvd) since i was like, 8.. and even back then all i watched was like one show a day, at the most. I don't understand how anyone can actually watch tv and enjoy it.

I don't know if someone else has said this, but tapestries are nice.

they can add a lot of color to an entire wall and cover up cinderblock/ ugly painted prison cell type walls with aplomb.

good to bring a flag of where you are from too if you have any pride in your nationality. Everyone likes flags on their lights or on the door.

The reading lamp is everything!

microwave
microfridge
ramen/popcorn
HS Senior Yearbook
Lots of Socks
boots & wool socks (if it snows or rains heavily where you're going)
posters of hometown sports team
state/national flag of wherever you're from
wires/extension cords

If you're going to have a roommate, the two of you can split the cost of some items

what about posters: many medium/smallish ones, or a few nice large ones?

A few nice large ones ;-).
