Are dorm room theft, specifically at singles in Clara Dickson, common occurrences at Cornell? Do I need to bring a safe for valuable objects such as iPods, etc..?

There isn’t much theft. Just don’t be stupid and practice common sense. Basically, locking your door when you aren’t in your room should do it.

I’ve seen thefts around, but only if you’re an idiot who leaves the door open all the times. Not just unlocked, OPEN.

^what he said. dont leave your door wide open. i left my door unlocked the entire year last year on west except for winter break…

My understanding is that they are very uncommon. However, I was shocked to learn that even at a school like Cornell people are stupid enough not to lock their doors. So do remember to lock your door, always; it is the only way to guarantee beyond a reasonable doubt that your belongings are safe. Some people are reluctant to lock their doors because they are too lazy to open them every time they leave the room. But seriously, the benefits gained from not locking your door (convenience) does not make the potential consequences (theft) worth it!

If you are able, I suppose it’s worth it to bring a safe, at least to keep important documents like your passport or social security card. However, if you’re good about keeping your room secure (and you don’t have a roommate), you would probably be fine bringing a small safe.

There is no reason on god’s green earth to bring your SS card with you. Leave at home!!

I did get a fire proof safety box for my daughter. She kept her passport and nice jewelries in the box. She’s never had anything taken from her room. She did find 3 young men in her room wearing swimsuits in a blow up pool one day. It was a lot easier to get rid of the guys than the pool filled with water.

jw, how do you guys like your dorms?

actually this isnt true. employers (even on campus) ask to make a copy of your SS card for employment purposes. as well as your passport or ID.

i will say that you should have your SSN memorized by now. and soon you’ll have your cornell ID # memorized as well.

its probably worth it to bring a safe for emergency stuff, but not to lock up everyday valuables like ipods etc. i kept a few thousand bucks cash, passport, etc in a little safe under the bed and only opened it a few times. there were a few times i was really happy to have it.

i never locked my door and nothing was ever stolen.

Just curious, what happens during vacations besides summer? Do you just lock your door and leave pretty much?

i’m guessing most people would take their small personal items with them. but yeah you just leave your stuff during the holidays and hope nothing’s missing. i dont think cornell is responsible for mishaps so maybe get renter’s insurance if you have valuable items.

my door was almost always unlocked

the following items were either stolen or misplaced

my scale, it was a really nice scale actually, pretty sure it was stolen not misplaced
pop tarts, 100% sure they were stolen
possibly my electric razor though it may be among some of the stuff I still haven’t unpacked
a pair of flip flops, probably misplaced not stolen

my tv, video games, and laptop were always untouched though

also my laundry basket was stolen when i left it in the laundry room while doing my laundry

bottom line…lock your door. No one will go through the hassle of trying to pick a lock

You should lock your door even when you’re going to the bathroom*

i left my door unlocked at all times.

never had anything stolen. depends on how much you trust your hallmates. i lived in a pretty tight-knit community (risley) and i trusted pretty much everyone on my hall.

ok let me rephrase. lock ur door when leaving the building. close it when u go to the b-room

Sarita, if that was a response to my post, I did not mean it as a response to yours. I think it is good practice to have your door constantly locked if you really want to guarantee security.

no i understand. I mean my first year i left my room unlocked as long as i was in the building. But when you are in bigger dorms like Clara Dickson or Donlon its not the best idea.

get renters insurance as well so if anything is stolen you can get money back for it… i think its 100 for the year.
