Does anyone have any thoughts about what to bring to college? I was thinking about a bookcase, chair, mirror, rug, towel hook, end table, etc. I know that kids bring electronics and cooking and cooling devices but I was wondering what else might be good to have.

If you are bringing a chair, I'd only start with the folding type- wait until you see the room! My daughter was in Curtis last year and loved it, but there definitely was not any any room for an extra chair!

You ought to check out the dimensions of the room to see how much room you have and what is already there. My D's dorm room already had a bookcase, desk, mirror, chair and of course the bed.

If it's not a single, it's a good idea to coordinate this with the roomate so that you don't bring duplicate items that can be shared.

She brought a rug, night table, alarm clock/radio, laptop, refrigerator. She wasn't allowed to bring a microwave, toaster oven or hotplate (firecode/safety issue) so you should check the school's website for their policy.

make sure your room is equipped with a brita filter

Depending on which dorm she is in, many rooms are tiny way too small for the extra items you mention. Other than a rug none of the things you mention should be necessary.

Also roomates may decide to split costs before hand by deciding who brings a tv, or couch or refrigerator. An individual coffee maker might be useful and possibly an extra small set of shelves you can assemble. I'd advise waiting til you get up there and if anything is needed get it either at Walmart in Norwich or the hardware store in Hamilton. The hardware store has been dealing with the dorm rooms forever and carries everything needed in the correct sizes.

Thanks for all the good advice. I think we will wait and see what we find.
