Hey Everyone!

Thankfully I got a scholarship at my college, but I have to dorm to get it. I'm definitely not going to dorm, so that's not an option for me, but I've heard of people still getting the dorm-scholarship-money without actually dorming. Have any of you done/heard about this? If so, can you give me some details?

Thanks! :)

I have not heard of such a thing unless the scholarship is one that assumes that you are not a commuter, in which case the school may allow the award to go towards other housing cost. But if the award is specifically for dorming and that is a stipulation, unless you can get exception from your college, I don’t see how you can get the money. Some schools have invested in dorms and other campus housing, and want the housing filled and will discourage other living arrangements. This is not something you can “sneak” past the college since dorm charges do go on your college bill and the absence of them when you don’t live there is going to be easily noticed.

Does your scholarship cover tuition and room and board? Is it an all or nothing sort of scholarship?

Daughter has a competitive (1 of 10 awarded) award that covers tuition and housing, which she can apply to an apartment/food if she chooses to live off campus. This is a term from the donor-specific award, and one of the few on campus that has that perk. Most other housing awards are dorm-specific. She’s starting her sophomore year next year, and has the option to move off campus, but chose the dorm for convenience and better quality housing stock. In order to have the money transferred to her for housing, she needs to contact the Honors College that administers this award and let them know the details.

Check with those who are offering the award. Perhaps they can give you the “tuition only” part of the award, and cancel the housing portion, or something else can be worked out. Will you be living at home?

guess who can be the only ones who can answer this question??? Your college. No one here can know if what your school will do with their own scholarship.

Isn’t this equivalent to getting a scholarship for an Engineering major then you change to a Dance major and want to keep the scholarship? Wow

Actually, I wasn’t trying to get around anything. I did contact my school, but they haven’t gotten back to me. I was just wondering if anyone had any personal experience about this. Thanks anyway.

I had a scholarship which required living on campus, and…I lived on campus.

I’ve heard sometimes at colleges that require every student to live on campus first year, students can get an exception if they get a letter from a religious clergy member saying they must live at home for that reason. But I’ve never seen that for a scholarship, just for the general requirement.

What you asked is the definition of “trying to get around it”. Not trying to get around it would be “I’m not going to dorm so I’m going to lose this scholarship”.
