Dorm vs. Apartment for Transfer Student

I'm transferring to my dream school in the fall and I can't decide where to live.

I can get an apartment with some friends and I'm not too sure how much I'd be paying, probably anywhere from 200-400/month including rent, groceries and gas.

I can also get a private dorm (I am the type of person who CANNOT have a roommate) at the new university.

The problem is the cost. The school is already expensive, and it's $7500 extra a year to live in the dorms. I don't have much in the way of financial aid, but I will be getting a music scholarship and I may be getting other scholarships the school provides, but I don't know how much yet.

I really don't want to go into a massive amount of debt, but I kind of want the "dorm experience" because I am a commuter at my current university because it's so close to home. I just don't know if the "dorm experience" is worth $7500 when I already have limited financial options.

I also am not super sure I want to live with my friends. I'm sort of afraid it would wreck our friendship, or they'd annoy me or bug me or something. I'm an only child and an introvert and I do NOT like to be bothered or annoyed.

Anyway, any advice/thoughts would be highly appreciated. Thank you.

If you’re going to live in a single, then I don’t see the point of living in a dorm. I’m transferring next year and doing the dorm thing, but my situation is a little different as I’m transferring abroad;)

If I were you, I’d go for the apartment with friends. The debt just wouldn’t be worth it imo.

Which school are you going to? I am jealous that you can live off of $400 a month! Heck I wish I could get a private dorm for $7500. You cant even get a shared room for that cheap in Southern California :(

To answer your question, I would definitely go with whatever you could afford. Based on the information you have given its probably best to live by yourself if you can afford it.

I wish I lived in Southern California, ahah.

I’m going to Cumberland University. Which is a small, private school a little ways south of Nashville.

And the only reason I can afford to live off $400 a month is because I’d be living with two other people, and rent is like $585… haha, I suppose that STILL sounds really cheap to someone from your area.
