Transfer student: dorm or apartment?

As a 21 years old (will be 22 by fall 09) junior transfer student who just got accepted by thurgood marshall, would living in the dorms be okay, or I am considered "old"? I don't know anyone in ucsd so I'm thinking dorms would be best. What do you think?

I'm another transfer student (will be 24 when I start attending) going to Marshall. I'm planning on living off campus. Looks way too expensive to live in the dorms. I could care less about making friends, so besides that, is the extra money really worth it to live on campus?

I wasn't aware that transfer student's were able to live on the dorms...I believe it is guaranteed housing for freshman and sophomores.

Yes, they have a transfer only student housing called "The Village at Torrey Pines", but at between $1310-1580 a month I don't know

here is a link...
UC San Diego Future Housing - The Village at Torrey Pines, West

Oh yea...completely forgot about those. They are a bit on the expensive side.

oh yeah, they're building a whole new section just for Transfer students near ERC. Looks nice

Yeah I don't get why they're so expensive, it's ridiculous. How the hell did you guys get your decisions already?? Ahhhh I've been checking that applicant site 10 times a day. (Even though I got a tag going on XD)

Hmm doing some calculations...I eat lunch on campus everyday, and it comes out to like $6 (I live off campus), sometimes even 2 meals. So one meal a day for a month, it comes out to about $180. A single where I stay costs around $1000 (Regents Court, slightly more expensive than the rest). That would be about 1180 a month for me if I ate only one meal outside (I live with 4 people right now, so rent is significantly less, but I'm assuming these are for single rooms). Depending on the mealplan they give, and assuming you eat 2 meals outside, $1360 seems around what I would pay, except this is staying on campus. EDIT: Realized i forgot to add in what I would be paying for cable and internet (80/month), and the utilities (probably 40).

Of course, all this is useless when you factor in that you probably would go for cheaper off-campus aparmtnets when living in a single, rather than paying $1000, so it all comes down to how much you value the on campus experience. For some, meeting new ppl within the complex and other residence halls on campus, being able to leave for class 10 minutes early as opposed to 30, and having a mealplan may be worth the extra expense. To other's, it may not.

Just as a ballpark number for comparison, if i were to get a single off campus, I'd be looking at $800rent + 40 internet (wouldn't get cable, but add another 40 if you want that), 15 for power, 25 for water, and food is dpendent on you. So taht comes out to about 920 (including cable) + food per month. I do have a car, but I only use it for work , but that also goes into the equation if you have one. Keep in mind this is living wihtin la jolla ( I used Costa Verde Village Apts for this)...if you're willing to live outside La Jolla, it can be quite a bit cheaper, but you need to factor in gas, parking permits, and the value of your time in commuting and conveinece.

Hope this made sense and is helpful for someone, my brain is fried from finals. Excuse the spelling mistakes

i think dorms are for freshmen and sophomores, eventho you APPLY for housing, it doesnt matter at all, but i think you can apply for I(nternational)-House which s close to ERoosevelt

They built a new housing complex for transfers only like post #4 said and linked.

800 dollar rent in la jolla!?

Are you living stacked on top of each other?

Cheapest I've seen is 1200 and some change for a 1bd room. Sure, you could get a 2 bd room, share it with 4 people, and pay like 500, but honestly, who wants to live like that?

<- Currently has 1 bd room less than a mile away from campus, and through careful budgeting, is able to afford it on his own...

I pay $730 for a 13'x11.5' single in a 2BR/2BA apartment. I've seen some single/studio apartments for about 1000 in the UTC area. If you're down for living in some houses in Clairmont or Mira Mesa, I've seen some 4BR/2BA for less than $1900. It's a great option for people who stay on campus all day and go home really only to sleep.

I was referring to a single room in a 2BD/2BA bathroom. I find a 1 bedroom in La Jolla to be quite expensive, and is an option that most people I know don't even consider, so I didn't include that. I also like having one other person in the house, so a 1BD isn't really a viable option for me. As Oyama said, you could find a studio for around 1000 in the UTC area...it does come down to the type of complex you want to live in, as well as the proximity and preference of shuttles (UCSD shuttle vs. city bus). Where I stay, a 1BD/1BA would be around 1350-1500.

@UC_Transfer: I'd be one of the people who lives like that currently, and has no problem with it. Our rooms are easily big enough to fit 2 beds, 2 desks, and all the other various little things we have, and there's enough closet room for all our clothes, etc. At around 520 for the master, plus some for internet, etc, it works for me. To each their own.

I suppose.

Seeing as the OP was asking about Transfer student housing, I'd figure they'd probably appreciate their own place if they could swing it.

To be quite honest, I don't see how it's to expensive to live on your own. I'm by no means a rich a man, or hell even well off, but I can afford rent, car insurance, satellite tv, cell phone, school, books, and pretty much anything else a modern home needs.

It's not hard, and totally doable if you know how to maintain a budget and can stretch a dollar or two....

Torrey Pines is exactly where I'd want to stay. It is worth the extra money for the dorm life in my opinion. San Diego is looking better and better. I'm getting to the point where I think I would turn down UCLA and go to UCSD. Assuming of course Berkeley rejected me. I went to Santa Barbara City College for a semester...flunked out cause all I was doing was drinking. I got into a raffle to stay in the UC Santa Barbara dorms and loved it.
