Dorming

For dorming at Fordham, is the manresa program desirable? Is it a lotta extra work? Also is Fordham totally wireless? Thanks!

soveirgndebt, any opinion?

Manresa is unique. Some love it and some don’t. Its highly subjective. It was somewhat problematic before they moved across campus, as they were formerly sort of an entity unto themselves and cliquish. Now more centrally located amidst other dorms, it will hopefully reduce some of that tendency.

Queens Court has its own agenda as well…and I recommend it strongly, if Manresa is not your thing. Part of me likes the personal attention you get from small groups and professors…but I also like the feeling of being integrated into the larger college overall. Queens, I believe, offers that mix. Again, its highly subjective and some may feel strongly and differently than I do.

My kid was in Queens and had a stellar experience. (including those nutty late night post midnight dances in the basement underneath the pipes! lol.)

One of the benefits of Fordham is over 4 years its possible to have four different dorm experiences and they do vary. (I know a state flagship top 10 school where you are stuck in the same dorm for 4 years! If you live on campus. YUCK!)

Manresa has its value. But yes, its somewhat time consuming I heard. We put down Queens as number one choice and Manresa as number 2 and we got Queens. So it all worked out.

Thats my perception. Good luck.

Just want to say thanks for the information Sovereign Debt!

My pleasure. Bottom line, I/we don’t have direct experience with Manresa, though my D knew people in it. I/we just sorta feel that you get the special programs and the freedom in Queens. But not saying Manresa is a bad choice.

Further, Fordham does a really good job of tapping kids on the shoulder after Freshman year grades are in (they rank kids at the end of the year) and those with 3.5 gpa and above get all kinds of solicitations from various departments about joining their “honors program” in that major.

Grab a hold of the bulletin you got at Spring Orientation (or look online) and examine the departments, the programs, the faculty and the special honors available.

Ping me for suggestions.

Hey thanks sovereigndebt! what do you mean ping me? and how did you get your name? does it resemble your financial situation after your daughter graduated from Fordham lol?

It means pm me if you want to discuss in detail…sometimes that helps and doesnt clog up these boards with personal chatter.

As for my moniker…its a secret! LOL. But we all should take note of the rising debt of sovereign nations, our own included.

As for my depleted funds…uh…yep. Fordham got their mitts into our nest egg and then some! A superb education but it comes at a very, very steep price.

I read the other day that college tuition nationally has risen 450% in 20 years. I can assure you, people’s bank accounts, savings, stock portfolios and wages have not risen and remained at that same level.

Regarding wirelessness, it’s nearly campus-wide. You might have trouble in the middle of Eddies or Martyr’s when you’re a hundred feet from an access point, but you can often walk from your dorm to a class without falling off the network. The dorms themselves are entirely wireless.

For what it’s worth, I lived in Queen’s last year. There were the best of saints, there were the worst of drunkards; there were those of wisdom, there were those of foolishness; there were those of belief, there were those of atheism; some went out when it was Light, some went out in the Darkness; we hoped the spring would never end, we despaired leaving for the winter; we had so many activities before us, and as freshmen we had no reputation before us; we were all going direct to grad school, we were all going direct to the military–in short, the experience was so diverse, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.

amen to that angleman…well stated. Our D1’s experience was much the same. In all it was a superlative year…the tears at move out day in May were flowing…and again at graduation four years hence.

My D selected Queens as her first choice on the housing form. I’ve read that she is supposed to receive a form from Queens to fill out. When can we expect the form to arrive? Will they send it by email or regular mail?

I am not sure if they have updated the process. We did all of that in 07. Back then you made three choices, in order of preference. Then my kid was asked to submit a short essay for Queens and the form. We learned of the selection for dorms somewhat late and the selection of the roomie even later. Queens is a high preference for incoming students, though by all means not all of them. Some prefer South. Some prefer Mandresa (formerly in Tierney), and some prefer Loschert (formerly North).

If you have not heard anything just yet, then that means nothing has been decided. But ResLife at Fordham has a life of its own! LOL. You can call ResLife on Monday and ask them politely when dorm selections will be announced and see what they say.

Queens is a great place and lots of fun…but extra work, and it tends to have a lot of really hard working students and honors students as well. I wish you well.

p.s. don’t forget that at Fordham you basically will be in four different dorms each year and so nothing is forever. Its about friendships…and those are made from every dorm. In fact, while my kid made superb friends in Queens who remain to this day, she also made friends with kids from North and South. Its all good.

Thank you, soveriegn. We will be going to the preorientation program tomorrow and I guess that we will ask someone there. My D listed Queens as her first choice when the housing form arrived last month and I was concerned that the form requesting the essay was sent out from Queens and it didn’t get to my D or it was somehow overlooked. We all like Queens and it sounds like a good place for D so I am hoping that she can dorm there next year.

I remember last year my son getting an email from the priest at Queen’s court in late June which he had to respond to with an essay to be accepted into Queen’s Court. At orientation last year everyone who was in knew it, and those who hadn’t heard were told that it was full (many people were tripled in double rooms to accommodate as many as possible). It would be better if it truly were “substance free” and only those students interested in that type of housing applied, but as someone else pointed out there are lots of partiers mixed in there who just lie in the essay that requires them to pledge to live alcohol and drug free. I know last year that left out some students who had requested Queen’s Court as their first choice.

If the Queen’s email hasn’t gone out yet, carry a smartphone or something to be able to send a response essay as quickly as possible. I was fortunate enough to be at home when Fr. Koterski emailed us all, but a friend who was at a summer camp responded to his message the next day and the dorm was already full.

It would be a very interesting crowd if QC were truly substance-free. Possibly overwhelmingly Catholic.

Wait so if you are in martyr’s u may have internet issues?

Ahahaha no, I meant the Martyr’s lawn, not the dorms themselves. Access points are strategically located throughout all the buildings, but they can’t always cover the wide-open spaces on campus.

Anglegrinderman–austin thomas. You deleted your facebook, but you’re on college confidential. Are you kidding me lol lol hahahahahahaahahahahahah

i knew it was you, once i saw that you were from palos verdes

guess who i am bahahaha. You should recognize me once u see my username

sohil!! …you’re one to talk, posting in fordham when you’re defecting upstate…

dude dom and i hung out today and planned the takeover of ohare/essays/tinks next year, it won’t be the same without diversity. and indeed, to whom will i confess my love for androgyny?

i don’t like how facebook shows “likes” for everything. too much incentive to only say what people will “like.” also twitter is less distracting :P

hi, quick question about provided furniture! I don’t know if it’s the same for all dorms, but what furniture comes with the room, specifically at Queen’s Court? I know I have a walk-in closet, a bed, a desk… that’s about it. I’m wondering if there’s a set of dressers and/or a bookshelf…

They provide a 3 drawer dresser and a small bookcase for each student.
