SUNY Fredonia–no theatre-specific housing; mix of older traditional dorms and a beautiful new apartment complex; most kids move off campus (my son’s off-campus apartment is closer to his classes than his on-campus apartment was)–the off-campus (older homes within walking distance of campus) apartments tend to have specific groups (my son is with three other Acting/MT kids; next door is a ‘tech house’ with several tech students; two doors down is another group from the department. On-campus dining is either traditional buffet, or food-court style. In town, there are sit down and takeout; chains as well.

Boston Conservatory has a row of charming brownstones reserved for freshmen. They face a botanical garden that is part of the “emerald necklace” park system. Performing arts kids are together since, that’s…everyone…and each room is unique, like a Hogwarts dorm. Some rooms are huge, some have fireplaces, exposed brick. Some have en suite bathrooms, some share (the hall bathrooms are cleaned by staff, the en suite bathrooms are not!) Each building has common areas to hang out. My D’s room is huge, although it’s shared by 5 girls, 2 MT, 3 Dancers. They opted to put all the beds in one large room (we’ve dubbed it the orphanage) and there’s an adjacent smaller room where they have their desks and a lounging area. They share a bathroom down the hall with one guy, who lives in a private room across the hall. The campus is very compact, so classes, in many cases, are right across the back alley. Food choices are good - lots of variety across both Berklee and BoCo. No comment on Chick-Fil-A (D is a vegetarian, anyway!) but there are tons of restaurant options in the Fenway/Back Bay 'hood. After freshman year, all students move off campus. There’s so much housing in the area that it doesn’t feel any different than the dorms. The 5 “orphan annies” are all staying together next year in a 4 bedroom apartment one block away.
The University of Miami does not have any program specific housing. My son has never roomed with MT students and finds that to be preferable since they spend so much time together through the four years.
Freshman housing is primarily in the four freshman towers, which are the oldest dorms on campus and slated to start being replaced in Fall 2020. A master plan is in the first phase to renew or replace most of the housing on campus over the next decade. The first phase, a new student village in the center of the campus, will open Fall 2020. Sophomores (Class of 2023) will have priority in that new village. A second upper classmen village for juniors and seniors is located at the edge of the campus.
The MT program building is connected to one of the freshman towers, so most of the freshman classes will be very close to the dorm. Note that freshman are not allowed to have cars.
All the dorms are designed to withstand a Category 3 hurricane.
Nebraska Wesleyan on campus living …
After the typical small shared double room w/ bathroom down the hall freshman year, housing improves DRAMATICALLY.
Sophomores can choose the Suites - Made for 4 students (single sex) with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, living room and a smaller kitchen w/ sink, microwave and refrigerator.
Juniors & Seniors can choose the Townhomes - Again, made for 4 students (can be co-ed), with FOUR bedrooms, two bathrooms, free washer/dryer in unit, full kitchen (refrigerator, stove, microwave, dishwasher) and a living room.
My oldest was at Vanderbilt and NWU’s living situation is leaps and bounds ahead of Vandy - which always shocks me when I think about it. We toured TONS of both MT and regular schools for my kids and NWU’s living situation was probably the best.
Worst food of any MT school we toured? I hate to talk smack, but it a non-popular school in Illinois that starts with a R (no, not THAT one) and ends with a D. And rhymes with Schmockford. It was HORRIBLE… and I’m not picky

Re: NYU - I will chime in to add that there is one freshman dorm (Weinstein - houses 600) which is very old-school (i.e. a little grungy) with only enough space along the walls for bed, dresser, desk… but they do get a private bathroom in each room, several lounges, some classrooms, rehearsal rooms, and the largest dining hall on campus. And there IS a Chick-Fil-A there, should your student fall into the pro-Chick-Fil-A camp.
I can do 2 schools!
Wright State: The large majority of the freshman BFAs (MT, Acting, Dance) live on 1 floor in the Honors dorm. It’s suite-style - 2 rooms connected by a bathroom. Each dorm room has it’s own sink and comes with a microwave and refrigerator. There is a workout room in the dorm, and study rooms. The great thing for move-in is that it’s on the “ground” floor on the parking lot side, so no elevator to deal with! Food is so-so and it was sometimes hard for D to get to dining halls during times they were open. There is a small “store” in the Honors Dorm to grab sandwiches & snacks. Most of the students move to apartments or houses after freshman year. Sadly, no Chick-fil-a on campus.
Texas State: Most of the freshman (Actors & MTs) are in the LLC housed in Retama. Rooms are TINY, and there are hall bathrooms. The dorm was recently refurbished (maybe last year?), and the bathrooms are very nice. There are good food options, but sometimes the same problem with things being open. Yes, there is a Chick-fil-a! After freshman year, most students move to apartments - there are lots of new college apartments close to campus.
CMU dorms are varied - from older buildings w no A/C to renovated mansions w koi ponds to a new-ish first year dorm w air and communal baths. The majority of kids move off campus for sophomore-senior years, but still retain a small commuter dining plan (afterall the drama kids are in their building virtually all day, and some nights).
Food - lots of variety, heavy on Asian options. Fresh fruit is sometimes a bit challenging to find, but overall it’s absolutely adequate and in some eateries, dare I say… good?! One option is open until 2am nightly, which is a great service to exhausted freshman actors and MTs.
I would say that the dorms were somewhat dissappointing, given the “full cost” pricetag; however, they are amazingly convenient and that has paid in dividends. The restaurant scene is fabulous - Pittsburgh is home to great food, often affordable!
@DramaLlama18 - you describe BoCo well, although my kid did have some ongoing issues with a leak in the ceiling, and the view of the alley isn’t so beautiful. But the location is outstanding, and although he’s looking forward to an apartment and his own cooking, he’ll miss the proximity of so many conservatory friends next year.

Wagner College - No theatre specific housing, however, Harborview (freshmen dorm) - 12th floor is considered the arts floor and has an incredible view across the bay of lower Manhattan. Generally, Wagner dorms are pretty shabby and in need of serious upgrades- for the exception of Foundation Hall, which is about 9 years old and has AC and all the amenities (starbucks) required in suite style dorms. Housing is guaranteed all 4 years and nearly all students live on campus unless commuters. On campus eating options - D hall (has gluten, vegan, but very limited) and Hawks Nest (grab and go and burgers, fries, chicken fingers etc.) Uber eats is popular!
I’m sorry, but being the southerner I am…I just couldn’t hang at Rider. And I giggle every time I come to this thread and their only description is “No chic fil a” I’m not sure my D could go there just because of that. I totally get and respect why they don’t have one on campus, but it’s a southern staple.
Pretty sure Rider would have risen higher on my daughter’s list just because of the whole Chick Fil A thing. I don’t care how good the dang chicken is. Some things are more important.
Point Park freshmen dorms you basically have to either choose 1. air conditioning; or 2. private bathrooms. Mine went with air conditioning. It’s a former hotel as well, like some of the other schools, and her experience there was fine. Most kids move off campus after freshman year. She’s had two different downtown apartments, and next year she’ll have a third.
Rider - visited this week and really liked the Dining Hall. They had tons of options and even have an area that the kids can make their own meals if they do not like what is offered (saw kids making stir fry and smoothies mostly). When we were there I saw the typical pizza, chicken fingers, pasta bar, salad bar, sandwich bar, I think I saw a wok area, tons of desserts. I know the kids were saying there is a huge cereal bar and I think omelet station for breakfast. My daughter thought her dinner was really good. Apparently all of the MT people eat together.
Hi Everyone! My son lives in the Performing Arts LLC dorm at Elon with MT, Acting, Dance, and Music majors. That dorm is fairly new. All rooms are air conditioned and there is an elevator in the building. Most of the rooms are a double with a shared bathroom between two rooms. There are some singles and what they call “pods” where it is two bedrooms with a living area and shared bathroom. Freshman and sophomores live on campus. Sophomores can petition to live off campus but most live on campus, either in the dorm or Elon apartments with upperclassmen. Lots of variety for food - different dining halls, on-campus restaurants like Pei Wei, Argo Tea, Boar’s Head, Freshii, etc. No Chick Fil A on campus but they do have a Biscuitville! There is a Chick Fil A nearby that the Elon buses will go to. They have late night dining in the dining halls on the weekend that runs until 2am. Also, there are several restaurants within walking distance. Overall, my son is happy with the dorm and the food.
Visited Missouri State this weekend. Very convenient dorms. Every style available- singles, suite style, doubles, triples. Most kids move off campus after freshman year. Apartments are so close to campus and lots of them. Very urban loft upscale looking apartments and more being built. Student Union has food court with Chick Fil A, pizza, Subway, and healthier grill option. Student union also had bowling alley with ping pong and pool and free popcorn - all free to students. Traditional cafeteria dining options very close to two of the major dorms
CCM freshmen and a few upperclassmen live mainly on specific floors at the high rise residence attached to the CCM village. Dining hall with varied options onsite. Dorm is adequate, run down but very convenient. There is the homophobic-but-delicious chicken chain on campus. Much more importantly for Canadians is a Tim Hortons coffee place at the other end of campus (part of our national religion), or a Starbucks right in CCM.
And there are TONS of restaurants just up the steps and across the street from the dorms next to CCM.
