dorms and free time???

I posted this under the Princeton 2013 discussion place thing, but I realized that most people look at threads here. So here's a copy-and-paste (with a couple minor changes):

Just wondering, how many hours of class does the typical Princeton lowerclassman have? I know it differs from person to person, and people also have other committments, but not counting extracurriculars, what are a Princeton students hours.

If one answer really can't be given, can we just get a few examples?

Also how would you rate your different dorms (location, architechture, room size, bathrooms, etc)?

On a scale of 1-10 (1 being terrible, and 10 awesome), how would you rate your schools' food? In other words, do you think it needs major improvement, it's satisfactory, or it's pretty good (for a dining hall, of course)

Thanks! :)

A typical non-lab class takes 3 hours a week (2 lectures + 1 precept, 3 classes, 2 seminars, or 1 seminar). Language classes take 5 hours a week (5 classes), as do lab classes (2 lectures, 1 three-hour lab). Lab classes are usu classes like engineering and natural sciences.

Engineers usually take 5 classes a semester, non-engineers take 4. So like, anywhere from 12 to 20+ hours is possible, with 14-18 being the most common.

Dorm architecture is almost always great. Room size and bathrooms vary. I’ve been lucky enough to get fairly good ones. There’s just too much variation to generalize (but there are a fair amount of brand-new dorms on campus).

Dining hall food is generally pretty good. People don’t really complain.

^thanks for your answer!

so even if you’re super intense, you’ll take like maximum 25 hours of class a week? That’s pretty good.

^but that’s not counting homework/studying, right?

t-san, aren’t you going to Princeton next year? do you know what classes you want to take yet?

Or were you just accepted, and you decided to go somewhere else?

I’m going - I have an idea of the classes I want/need to take, but we don’t completely set up our schedules until we get to campus next month.

and @violinist - no it doesn’t count HW/studying, but still on average 5 hrs class/day (if you are totally crazy and super intense) really isn’t too terrible.

14-18 is probably about right. Most of the time you devote to courses will be in the form of papers and problem sets, not attending class.

Most of the dorms are decent. Rocky/Mathey look great on the outside, but they show their age. Butler and Whitman are brand new and have lots of amenities. Wilson is pretty bad, but it’s right in the middle of campus. And Forbes is, well, Forbes.
