I'm posting this on a couple different college forums:

Just wondering, how many hours of class does the typical Yale lowerclassman have? I know it differs from person to person, and people also have other committments, but not counting extracurriculars, what are a Yale student's hours.

If one answer really can't be given, can we get a few examples?

Also how would you rate your different dorms (location, architechture, room size, bathrooms, etc)?

On a scale of 1-10 (1 being terrible, and 10 awesome), how would you rate your schools' food? In other words, do you think it needs major improvement, it's satisfactory, or it's pretty good (for a dining hall, of course)

As for comparing food, I think most college students would have a hard time b/c they probably haven’t gone to too many other places. I attended Y and worked at several institutions afterwards. I can tell you that Y really puts forth a great effort (versus just getting grub out for the masses).

There’s tons of variety and many eateries across campus. I say food services is VERY high, compared to other colleges where I ate regularly.

The suite system at Yale and overall poshness is the envy of most people. Yale’s “poor” rooms would be the most sought after rooms of dorms in many other schools. I’m not joking.

Thanks T26E4! I’m not really trying to compare, I’m just curious as to what students think about their own school. But it sounds like Yale has really nice dorm rooms.

example of my average wednesday:
7:00 wake up and do some homework, i work well in the morning
9:30 go back to sleep to take a 20 minute nap
10:00 wake up again
10:15 run out and grab a bagel from one of the colleges closest to my class
10:30 class
11:30 check my mail box, stop and talk to people
12 ish: lunch
1:30 class
2:30 class again
3:45-dinner (around 5:30) chill with my suitemates, check email, do some language homework
7-8 quick homework time, usually problem set or reading
8-10 extracurricular activities
10-12 homework, study
12-when i go to sleep chill with suitemates

i do about 3-5 hours of homework a day, but i don’t do any work on fridays. saturdays, i only do work/study in the morning and do nothing after 4. sundays, i basically work from 2- midnight, taking a break for dinner.

food, i’d gave a B. notre dame was better but it’s better than most colleges i visited. it does get old though but that’s to be expected at any college. dorms i’d give an A, they’re amazing. well except for ldub. but even that isn’t bad.

Thanks pepper! That answers my question. I was really looking for “a day in the life” even though I’m sure it ranges. How many suitemates do you have? Just a couple, or a bunch?

You can have anywhere from two suitmates to as many as eleven… it depends on your residential college, but I think the most common is about four to six in a suite.

Eleven? I didn’t know any suites held 12. My buddies and I took the McClellan 8-person suite our Senior year. It was a blast. Two floors, two fireplaces, two living rooms, two baths, skylights, six singles and a huge double.

Saybrook has a 12-pack. I wasn’t aware that Welch does. Also, a suite can have as few as 2 people (i.e. one suitemate). Next year I’m in a 3-room double - 2 people each with a single bedroom + a common room. And there are some stand-alone singles too, though I’m not sure why anyone would want to live in one.

sgtpepper08’s schedule looks pretty normal for a Yalie, though most of us are asleep well past 7:00 AM.
