I am headed of to boarding school in the fall as a freshman and I am super excited…idk how to decorate my dorm though…I love decorating things but there isn’t much space to do that since the dorms are small…I don’t want to be to over the top…any ideas (maybe how to incorporate cute storage spaces into my room? TYSM!!!:))))))
@cababe97 having moved kids into too many dorm rooms to count, my advice would be to try to wait to buy storage solutions until you move in.
We have spent countless hours purchasing things that had to be returned. Things that seem simple and straightforward - like over the door shoe organizers (because the door wouldn’t close once it was attached), over the door mirrors (because the dorm room had a wall mirror), desk lamps (no room, didn’t need), rugs (rooms were carpeted), tension rod and drapes (these didn’t meet fire code), shower caddies (dorm had cubbies built into bathrooms) or slide under the mattress bed caddies (mostly because these just don’t work).
Some things that have worked are brightly colored under the bed storage bins to hold snacks and extra toiletries, Jewlery trees, makeup organizers, hampers & lots of command hooks. To make the room feel like home, we purchase great bedding. This includes mattress topper and fun comforter, throw pillows etc. Our kids over the years have hung tapestries, posters, photos and Christmas lights on their walls- but every school has different rules and many forbid these items.
@anonymousia many things that are forbidden to be hung, seem to be ignored in certain dorms. She also had a tapestry on the wall. Our older son had a mini fridge in his room for a few years as well.
Wheelwright is a really nice dorm that’s been renovated recently. It’s the second largest girl’s dorm after Dunbar, so it might be difficult to get to know everyone in your dorm, but nonetheless, there’s a ton of great girls in Wheelwright.
