Hey guys, I recently found out I was accepted into NU and now I decided to start looking at some different dorms. I would love some advice from other students and am wondering what other accepted freshman are thinking. I'm an ECON major so my thought was to go south campus. I'm basically trying to decide between 1835 Hinman and Allison. That said, any thoughts on RCs? Maybe Willard? Thanks in advance!

I was thinking the same thing too. I was accepted into WCAS and I’m undecided. I was thinking of staying in a residential college like Willard. I really like the thematic and close knit community I heard Willard is like, so i also want to know alot more about Willard, maybe Shepard and Allison. I also want to know about more dorms though. I know I want to stay in the south part of campus. One thing I want to know is about the facilities and how new/old certain dorms/rooms are and what we’re allowed to have in our dorms. I’ve heard that south is very artsy, quiet, and close knit while north is more party, very social, and most of the fraternities reside there. Someone told me that one never gets their 1st or 2nd choice, so I’m really trying find the dorms I really think I would like, but whatever happens, I’m going in with an open mind. Btw… Is it better to stay in a residential college or not?? What are typical size of the rooms, meaning double, triple…etc, What are one’s chances of getting single, double, etc…

I got my first choice, just saying.

Willard and Allison are like the most well known dorms in the South, but people know what you mean if you say Hinman or Shepard. The dorms that get the WTH… are SMQ, NMQ, Chapin, etc.

Willard and Allison rooms are both close to 12x18 (not sure on specifics). 2nd and 3rd largest, behind Chapin’s marginally larger rooms.

I recommend those two above all in the South. Then Hinman and Shepard at an equal level.

Hey, I’m an incoming freshman too, econ major, and I’ve heard that for econ it doesn’t matter which side of campus you live one because more often than not your classes will be split amongst both north and south. Actually that probably holds true for many students in general.

As for me, on the North side, I’m most interested in Elder, an all freshman hall where everyone is friendly and excited to be there and the hall hosts many events and fosters a good sense of community for its residents.

For the same reason I’m most interested in Willard in the south campus. Their website is also promising.

Hey guys did you get the March to the Arch link from the school today? They bring these things up, but briefly. cubecl, how large are Hinman’s dorms? I loved Elder but I was under the impression that econ majors are better off in the south, but it’s good to know I have more options! Hinman interests me because it has both a store and dining hall and I like the location but the North by Northwestern guide has it as a less social dorm than Allison, Elder or Willard. Any insight? Light23 I’m pretty sure that the majority of kids live in a double.

No kidding, econ majors can be anywhere. I was in South for one class (Stat 210) and in Tech for two classes (Econ 201 and Math 224).

Elder is good. They’re winning the “send the most kids to the hospital” race this year. So far.

Socially, Hinman is less so than Allison, Elder, and Willard. You might want to get comfortable with eating in a variety of places. While North campus basically has Sargent cause Elder isn’t that good, South campus has Willard (don’t go honestly), Plex East/West, Hinman, and Allison. So while a dorm does have a dining hall, you’ll find yourself stuck at that corner of the campus if you just head downstairs everyday.

My son (junior at NU) loved living as a freshman in Shepard, which is a large non-theme residential college on south campus (like Willard). He ate at Allison, right next door. Lots of great social activities in these two big RCs. (Both Shepard and Willard have websites – Google). Shepard has room ACs and fairly new flexible furniture, good size rooms; communal bath.

He was advised that while most kids do not get any of their top 5 choices (but still end up liking their dorm), if you put Shepard or Willard as your top 2, you will get one of them, since they need the extra effort of a short essay which cuts down on the number of students requesting one of them, and that advice worked for him. He has heard if you put ANY of the small themed RCs anywhere in your top 5, you will get it, as they are not at all popular.

Also, he says that as a freshman and even to some extent as an upperclassman, your classes are all over campus (i.e., his French classes were north at Tech), no matter what your major, so don’t get stuck on that.

Two other advantages to south campus from my son’s perspective – his AT&T cell reception is terrible on north campus (where he now lives in a frat) and OK on south campus, and he liked south campus being close to all his fav fast-food places – not many dining options within easy walking distance up north. For guys, he does think it is easier to rush a frat from north campus, but it’s doable from south.
