Dorms at Yale

Will someone please describe in great detail the Freshmen dorms at Yale! Are they big, are the rooms linked to other rooms, are there personal bathrooms...how are they!

Do you literally have to be in a room with more than one other student? Please describe how the rooms are related to the residency college or floor.

I know they probably picked nice rooms, but they do have those room pics on "Sweet Suites" sections of the admitted students site... (Lawrance and Farnam are frosh dorms).

Best,
DMW

when i visited Yale for Bulldog Days, a common arrangement i saw was a common room, where people had their desks and study stuff, and two two-person bedrooms.

yeah, the general idea is a common room and bedrooms. bathrooms in the entryway.

1 bathroom for about 4 people........(sigh). As you can tell I am a germaphob! Upon entrance of my dorm I will be armed with 409 and Lysol..ready to unleash a barrage of disinfectant steril"ness" upon my unpure room.

Weird I know...LOL

But serious I am a neat freak

along with being an apfreak. Makes for a deadly combination.

Any kitchen area?

nope, keep in mind most of the dorms were built back when only prep school boys went here and there were maids and such.
we rely on the dining halls for our meals.

the only dorms with kitchen areas are Swing Space.

Every residential college has a corresponding freshman dorm on Old Campus except for the two (TD, Silliman) that house their freshman in the main college. I've only seen the Stiles dorm, Lawrance, which has suites consisting of a living room, a bathroom, and some bedrooms, either doubles or very dainty singles. Most kids either buy or rent a small fridge for their suites.

If anyone is interested, I do have some pics from S's dorm room from freshman year - it's Bingham on OC. Just P/M me and I'll give you the link.

In my S's first dorm, he had 6 in his suite, 2 doubles and 2 singles with a nice size common room.

Oh, and for the bathroom, the one he had was for 12 people, but there were 3 sinks, I believe, 2 showers and a few toilets, but don't quote me on those numbers, it's from memory, which isn't that good anymore :(

LOL to that wrathofgod

The dorms I looked at generally had about 4 bedrooms (mix of singles and doubles) and a decent-sized common room in between. The suites were generally set up for about 6 people with 1 decent-sized, non-private bathroom. The rooms varied greatly in terms of size; some of the singles were very small and dark, while others were almost like doubles. The doubles also varied, as some of them were very small with bunk beds, while others were much more spacious.

most of the dorms looked really nice. I liked the idea that 10 of the 12 halls are all next to each other, kinda cool, but i wouldnt want to live in the two newer ones that are actually on the campus

hmm i don't know what evan was trying to say.
10 of the 12 residential colleges (get that into your vocabulary prefrosh, they aren't hall, they aren't houses) have corresponding dorms on the Old Campus.
Silliman and Timothy Dwight house their frosh in their colleges right away.
the two newest colleges are Morse and Stiles but still house their frosh on the Old Campus. these are the ones that kids tend to not want to live in.

When I visited my friend (A Yale Freshman) there was a common room (pretty decently sized), six singles, and a bathroom with two sinks, one toilet, and one shower. This is Lawrence.

To the person that asked about kitchens, freshmen placed in Silliman will have a small kitchenette (with fridge, microwave, and two stoves) and air conditioning (which will be amazing come move-in time) this year as they will be living in Swing Space.
