what happens for students who can't go home during the winter break when the dorms close?

Try to find a sublet for the month or stay with a friend/relatives.

yeah, since it’s the holiday time, you could probably ask to stay with a friend who lives in the bay area.

wouldn’t it be too much of an imposition to ask to stay with a friend? lol

Sometimes internationals band together to crash in a sublet or hotel somewhere or go to a vacation spot. Some university staff (not faculty) rent couches and bed to stranded students. What ever the plan, assume it will cost lots of money.

no, one of my cousins in college once let a stranded student stay over at his house for the holiday. it was great, he basically just joined our family for christmas and all the other holiday activities. it’s usually not too much of a biggie, as long as you’re friendly, polite, thank them profusely, don’t invade private space, etc. besides, it’s the holiday time. most families are more than happy to share or help out.

What day do we have to check out of the dorms during break? When is the last day we can come back before spring semester starts?

do they kick us out during spring break too?

You need to be out during the break between Fall and Spring, but your stuff can stay in the room. [Living at Cal - Res Hall Policies](http://www.housing.berkeley.edu/livingatcal/reshall_policies.html#l)
