Dorms for incoming freshman!

So I missed the first deadline by two days b/c i mailed my application in...unfortunately I know now that I'll be low on the housing list = [
My top choices are
1. Broward
2. Reynolds
3. Degraff
4. Gilchrist

So my question is: are my top 4 choices good ones? I figured that instead of putting the nicest dorms as my #1 and #2 (wildwood, gilchrist..)...that i'd put ones I'll have a better chance of getting due to my priority number.

I love the idea of suite style, b/c i've heard bad things about halls like Smith (which I'm afraid I'll get stuck in b/c of my priority number)....are these only bad things to the kids who are in nicer dorms? I know in community halls that you can meet people easier, but are they harder to get work done in? Sleep in due to noise?

Also, since Reynolds makes you sign a wellness agreement, is that hard to stick to? I thought it was no alcohol, drugs, etc IN the dorms, but its OUTSIDE the dorms as well...So is that a bad idea, especially while in college, when there will be awesome parties everywhere? lol

And is Degraff a long walk from the center of campus? Like from the dining halls b/c i will be getting a meal plan

Thanks for all the help!

P.s I haven't signed a housing agreement yet b/c I find out if I got into FSU from the 2nd deadline in about 10 days...so I have no priority number yet, but I'm assuming it's really high!

If you sign the Reynolds wellness agreement, it is an agreement to be chemical free on and off campus, all the time. Be prepared to be asked to move out if you don’t hold to that. But it is a great dorm.

Jeannie Murphee is women only, and because of that there are often rooms available for even high numbers, but it is a nice suite style renovated dorm with roomy rooms. So what if you can have male visitors.

Degraff is not that big of a hike, and it is a nice new dorm.

If you get a dorm you don’t want, fill out a transfer request. A lot of folks with high numbers get into good dorms by getting a transfer when some students are no shows for the start of the term.

Smith and Kellum Halls have bad reputations, but they are the most social, and the people who live there all love it. That said, if you end up in one of those dorms and don’t like it, file a request for a change, and it will likely be granted at some point in the year. People move around for a variety of reasons. If you’re at the bottom of the barrel for the housing priority numbers, I think it’s unlikely you get into any of the dorms you listed, except maybe Reynolds due to what SunnyFlorida pointed out.

My honest opinion is that while a lot of people affiliated with the university will say “Communal halls are MORE SOCIAL!”, its not worth the negatives. Yes the bathroom is cleaned for you, but its only M-F cleaned, I’ve seen puke in the showers stay over all weekend (and its fairly common), also its not uncommon to have showers broken, while they are working it is true that you will never have an issue waiting for a shower, but i’ve seen it where a whole floor’s showers were out for 3 weeks and that floor had to go to other floors to shower.

As for being more social it depends, I know people in communal halls who don’t know the people living next door to them, and I personally (living in suite-style) know everyone on my floor (almost) and many people in my building. It’s just about how open YOU are, my door is always unlocked (unless i’m not home) and people come and go. Plus EVERY hall holds socials all the time (we just had a LOST viewing party) and those are a great way to meet people you live with.

Not trying to discourage you from living in a communal hall, there are some benefits, however I rather be honest than see you come to FSU expecting one thing and then hating where you are going to live for the next year. Oh and as others said, if you don’t like it apply for a transfer, but definitely give it a chance first, you might LOVE smith or kellum, I know some crazy people who actually prefer it.

I’m beginning to look at colleges for 2011. I’m researching on campus housing, hoping I’ll be accepted in 2011 to FSU  Thanks for your post. So, suite style seems to be the way I want to go from posts. Wildwood, Gilcrist, Reynolds, Degraff seem the nicest? which dorm are you in? just curious. THX! any other dorm (name) suggestions?

Does anyone know how far target or publix is from campus? Do they have a bus going there?

@emily
Degraff is much closer to the “center” of campus and is right near the union so I chose that over wildwood which is by the stadium. A lot of my friends love gilchrist, its very nice, and Reynolds is nice too, though I never could live there because I smoke, though if you don’t smoke/drink its nice to have a place where you can find some calm, though i’ve never had a problem with it being too loud in degraff. Plus renyolds is right next to suwannee

@sohini target is kind of further, however there is a publix on Ocala. But beware, its called club pub (clublix, etc) for a reason. Its an amazing social experience, I’ve spent 2 hours in that publix just talking to people, there is a bus that goes to heritage grove which is right across the street from the publix, but by far the best way is to drive, if you don’t have a car then you should carpool with friends. Its hard carrying groceries on the bus (plus ice cream melts).

my number is like 1920 something and my choices were gilchrist, broward, deviney, and dorman because i couldnt think of anyothers and they were all pretty much in a centralized location, which i liked. plus i have my roomate more important than dorm. any chance my friend and i could get gilchrist or broward? and which is a better choice, deviney or dorman?

I’ve heard both are pretty much equal between deviney and dorman, I’ve only been in dorman and its actually not that bad. There is a chance you may get it, depends on who has the highest priority number, when you choose by roommate they calculate it by whoever has the highest number.
