Dorms @ FSU

For an incoming freshman what is the best dorm to live in at FSU? Preferably a hall that has singles, but not super necessary.

Don’t expect a single as a freshman, even if you apply for one. Generally those are very rare and reserved for RAs or students with documented medical issues.

The “best” dorm is very subjective. Dorman and Deviney are brand new (this is the first year they’ve been open) and are mostly centrally-located. Wildwood and Degraff are only about 8 years old and are very close to the style of Dorman and Deviney (and are carbon copies of each other). Wildwood is near the gym, stadium, and SW side of campus, Degraff is located across Tennessee Street from campus and is close to the student union.

East-side dorms like Landis, Gilchrist, Broward, Jennie Murphree, Reynolds are similar, were renovated semi-recently (about a decade ago), and are suite-style. They’re all going to require a meal plan though and I can’t recommend forcing one on yourself.

My son is a freshman. He is at Degraffe. The dorm itself is fine, but he would tell you he would have preferred Wildwood just because of location. Degraffe is far from nearly everything.

Dorman, Deviney, or Wildwood. They’re nice dorms, are centrally located, and don’t require meal plans.

If a student doesn’t get a meal plan, are they eating out most meals? Too costly. I lived in FSU dorms and the shared kitchens on each hall are limiting since the only fridge you have is a tiny one in your room with an unreliable/ tiny freezer section. I don’t get it.

Buying your meals in the dining hall when you go with FlexBucks or GarnetBucks or even cash on a per-meal basis is actually cheaper in most cases than getting a meal plan. And when you don’t want to eat there, you have options and are not forced to feel like you need to use your meal plan so that you don’t lose it.

Are you able to choose your roommate, or are you randomly assigned a roommate? I’m just wondering if it’s too soon or not to go searching for roommates on Room-surf, haha.

You can request certain roommates, but there’s no guarantee that you will get them.

I read that all honors students live in Landis Hall. I’m applying to honors, so if I get into the program will I have a spot reserved in Landis. I heard that dorms go fast and I won’t know where I’m going until April. I’d hate to figure out that I’m going to FSU and not have a dorm.

Very interesting change, if true. Housing has always said that Landis wasn’t large enough to support all of the Honors students that FSU has incoming. I wonder if that is going to mean that Honors acceptance will be even more competitive than it already is.

Either way, I still wouldn’t chance waiting until April to apply for housing, whether you are Honors or not.

When I visited FSU in early Oct, i had a meeting with the head of the honors program. He mentioned that he is reducing the size of the incoming honors class to make room for all honors students to live in Landis, so I’d imagine admissions will become even more competitive.

Yes, as of this year, students are invited to apply to the Honors College. Up until last year. they were simply invited. I read that they are becoming more selective for fall 2016. Also, being accepted into the Honors College does not insure a spot in Landis. You must have a good priority number to have a chance to get a room in Landis. Gilchrist Hall is the honors overflow dorm.

Well, I am currently in the process of filling out my honors app and it mentioned somewhere that, as a condition of my admittance to the honors program, I must live in Landis Hall. It sounds like they are requiring all the incoming honors students in the fall 2016 cohort to live in Landis, so there will be enough room for everyone.

It actually states that honors students must live in Landis Hall OR a Living Learning Community. Students that apply and are selected as Presidential Scholars must live in Landis Hall only.
