I’m thinking of submitting my preferences as:
- Anacappa (it looks nice all around).
- Santa Catalina (it’s gorgeous, but I’ve heard mixed response to the food and the distance).
- San Miguel (I’ve heard it’s a bit run down).
I’d go for San Nicholas, but it looks like it’s only for the Freshman Summer Start Program.

I’m an incoming Freshman who is only looking at dorms with scholar’s floors (I’m going to be an honors student). Is this a good selection/order?
And does anyone know what kind of state San Miguel and/or the Portola commons are in at the moment?

San Nic is only FSSP? I didn’t notice that. Hm. I thought it looked like they were going to be there but only taking a portion of it. I’m going to check that, myself, for my son. At the moment he wants Santa Catalina. I understand there was renovation of some sort to the dining commons a year ago, but then I understand they were going to put in a whole new one with the construction of new student apartments in the parking lot that will be starting next year, but it didn’t get budgeted. Maybe they don’t need one until the new apartments come on line in a few years. In any event, it has recently had some renovations from what I understand.

As to San Miguel, I don’t know, I will be watching for answers. Anacapa is great, or Santa Cruz, imho. I stayed in one of those in a summer program and liked it, years ago (I was at FT - now Santa Catalina my first year there.) I liked being on campus, but my son thinks the facilities themselves are more important and is leaning towards SC (I still think of it as FT) next year.

Well, the housing preference form gave the impression of it only being for the FSSP.

The only San Nicolas options were:
San Nicolas FSSP - Double.
San Nicolas FSSP - Triple.
San Nicolas FSSP - Single.

There were no options for San Nic without the FSSP.

Just realized that last post sounds a bit blunt. Sorry about that.

Anyway, I as doing more research and found a rather decent article about UCSB housing. It unashamedly caters towards a young female audience, but it does have some helpful information that can supplement what’s already on this thread.

@CultClassic thanks. Don’t mind the bluntness, we hadn’t gotten to the form stage. That’s a reason to do FSSP I guess, but my son doesn’t want to miss the summer with his high school friends, as things stand… We’ll see if he changes his mind.

Is San Miguel no longer available for triples? I want to do environmental floor LCC, but not have to pay extra for a double while doing so. I don’t see the option for San Miguel triples in the option list…

For those who really don’t want triples that is likely a plus. I understand San Miguel rooms are a little smaller, so it kind of makes sense, anyhow, given they are now mostly triples as I understand it, overall. I think some apartments were supposed to open this year that aren’t opening until next year, so the reduction in crowding didn’t occur this year.

You can send an email to the people at UCSB housing through their website on that section, and they do get back to you.

Thanks, I just called them (surprised to get directly connected thats a big plus) and they said San Miguel never had triples to begin with. I guess I’m sticking with the shorties then since environmental floor was my only reason for SM.

bump for those still deciding but remember they have to RECEIVE your application by June 1 if you are a freshman, it is not a ‘postmarked by’ date if you send it by mail.
