Dorms @ UCSB?

I just finished my freshman year… the on campus dining commons are good, Portola is ****… know that in advance, I had many nights living in FT where I had cereal for dinner… it was that bad.

@hayz650: haven’t been inside fountainbleu but from the virtual tour on their website it looks pretty good, i’ve toured tropicana and the surrounding area inside is nice but i wasnt really impressed with the rooms and stuff

@frunkfeed86: u can keep changing your room/roommate preference i think up until the deadline, which is usually around august i think

does anyone know if there are closets in santa catalina? or is it just a drawer type thing:/

i want to know where ill be living already

there are closets in every dorm and i think drawers too

Hey everyone. Can someone please post some info on the San Rafael and Manzanita Dorms since I read somewhere that that’s where most transfer students end up. Which one is better? Pro’s and Con’s? Thanks!

Thank you for such a long, thorough, informative post; it was definitely helpful. Should I apply for Santa Rosa… I mean it sounds like an environment I would be interested in. Would you recommend it as an incoming freshman. Was it the best experience? Also, which was your favorite residence hall? I think what I just really want to know is if Santa Rosa is nice. I mean like clean, pretty, nice place because it is important for me to live in a nice dorm room. Also, how was it living with roomates? I want a single in Santa Rosa, but I do not think there are singles there correct? I don’t really want to live with roomates, however if you say that it is a NICE place for an incoming freshman such as I, then I’ll deal with it. In addition, I probably won’t have a car, so is it convenient to live there in terms of getting around on campus and on time to classes? It would be nice if you would reply. Thanks again.

If I’m a student coming over from England, what would the best halls be for me does anyone know? I spent a year in the halls here in manchester but I’ve heard its a pretty different environment over there, I’d be after the most sociable noisy ones because that’s what I’m used to here! Also, what sort of age are people in freshman year? is it about 19 like here? Any advice would be well appreciated thanks!

Duuuuuude! I live and study at a boarding school in Blackpool. Add me on FB, I’ll fill you up on everything.

when putting in my dorm preferences, do i have a better chance of getting a specific residence hall if i put a residence hall more than once? would putting an anacapa triple as a choice and an anacapa double as the next choice be a bad idea? if the triples are taken does that mean the doubles are automatically taken as well?

Bump for freshmen… note the older posts were before there were as many triples. The policies on that seem to be on the UCSB housing web page.

I’m reposting the most informative post from above, since it took me a couple of sittings to get through the thread. Note that ‘FT’ is now ‘Santa Catalina’ and the festival posted about now includes all ‘Channel Five’ dorms. Apparently the new site format limited post length so I will have to do it in two posts:

bump again for students asking for advice. I don’t know how many current UCSB students will be on here, given how nice the weather is right now in Santa Barbara…

if you do freshman summer start program, are you automatically placed in a dorm? (with all the other FSSP kids)

@2018calisenior Last year they did that and kept the students together in San Nic because the year before people complained that the group was split up. Seems to me you’d want to meet more people, but what do I know. I don’t know if they are doing it that way this year though.

FT is the best dorm on campus. Take it from a current student living in FT, I love it, the environment, the people and the rooms are a LOT more spacious than the shorties including your own bathroom.

When we were at spring insight the two people manning the housing fair were both from Santa Catalina (FT) and both loved it as well. It isn’t on campus, but a lot of people love it.

I’ll post for my son, who is in his second year at SB and does not post on CC. He lived in Santa Catalina/FT his freshman year and absolutely loved it! There were 23 from his high school as freshmen at SB, so several were at San Cat and the rest were spread around at the other dorms (including Trop) so he was able to see many other dorm set-ups. Bottom line…he wouldn’t change a thing…loved living at San Cat and would recommend it to all incoming freshmen.
