Dorms & Worms

Hey,

There's been a lot of talk about which dorms are the best ones, and which freshmen should do their best to avoid. Today, I took some time and looked through dorm pictures on the Wesleyan website and came to very different conclusions than those which many people assured me were true.

For instance, Clark, which is usually labeled as the 'Children's Hospital,' looked like the cleanest place overall, from pictures.

Could anyone please tell me more about these dorms? I looked at the Butterfields and they seemed, pretty much, the best all around, except for their relatively distant position from the center of campus.

I think it is called the Children's Hospital BECAUSE it is the cleanest... No?

Yeah... but, well, my conception of 'clean' doesn't really imply 'completely antiseptic.' I mean, I wouldn't like to live in a place that smells like cheap bathroom soap all the time, to be honest.

Clark's relatively high ceilings, left over from when it was originally built (1916), coupled with its stainless steel bathroom fixtures, does give it the look of a foundling hospital. But, there's no smell of ammonia that I've been able to detect.

The Butts are okay. A lot depends on who's on your hall (of course.) You can elect to keep the door that connects an adjoining hall open at all times, making it one long hallway or, your "suite mates" can elect to keep the hall small and accessible just from your entry.

I've hears a lot about the Butts being kind of 'isolated' from the rest of the University. Physical distances aren't too important, I think, but I've still been told that most people who live in the Butts don't get really involved with people from other residences. Do you think this is true?

it would be unfair to single out the Butts in that regard. Wesleyan is very house oriented, in terms of general social structure. Actually, the nice thing about being in the Butts, is that you're much more likely to meet sophomores who'll plug you into what's what.

Well, then, which do you think is the most well-rounded residence? I mean, one that's close to things, has a party scene (but not too big), and is integrated? I mean- WestCo seemed a bit too... heavy, for me, at least.

Thanks for answering all my questions btw. :P

clark.
10char.

Hey, I was also thinking about housing and I am REALLY keen on fauver. If I request 1st year housing and mention that I really want fauver, what are the odds of getting it? How does wes go about allotting housing and roommates?

is there any sort of roommate match-up or is it done completely randomly?

i disagree about clark being well-rounded. my hall partied like crazy freshman year; there was this whooo party! mentality that took hold the first day of orientation and never let go. if you want that, live in clark or fauver (they are also super clean and have convenient laundry, decent kitchens, and good locations--esp. clark).

if i could do it all over, i definitely would have done mixed-year housing in the butts or westco for freshman year. there's still partying, but the atmosphere is more relaxed overall. also, i don't think the butts are isolated. everyone i know who lives there is really happy. it's a nice community, and it's less than a minute walk from the main part of campus. also, they have summerfields, which has recently become one of the better places to get food on campus.

but as johnwesley said, a lot of the experience depends on who's on your hall (in any dorm).

How are roommates matched up?

as a freshman, you can request a roommate if you know someone. other than that, it's basically random.

I can’t make up my mind. I’m stuck because I don’t seem to know what exactly I would prefer between those atmospheres. I’m just going to put down my tops ones, and leave the decision to mother earth.

There’s no survey?

no survey. i think reslife says this is because they realized whether or not they did a survey they got the same number of kids who wanted to change roommates.
