Dorms

I’ve heard a lot of things about dorms. And I already knwo there is no way i’m gonna have a private bathroom unless I get a apartment myself. I am a germafobe. I hate being stank and other people being stank. So. How do you handle living with someone who is nasty and rank? I just can’t see myself doing it!

Well, you have a number of different options available to you, depending on where you end up going to school. For one thing, some school dorms have only shared floor bathrooms, some have only in-suite style bathrooms (where two or four folks share a normal-size bathroom), some have individual bathrooms in apartment-style living, many have some combination of the aforementioned. So it’s not impossible that you could have your own bathroom – it just depends on where you go and how important that is to you.

For another thing, most schools will allow you to do some sort of roommate survey or match tool, allowing you to rank cleanliness as high priority item, which will hopefully keep you from rooming with a slob. Or if you just can’t deal with another person, you may be able to get a single room.

I would advise you to both start digging into the housing options at your desired school(s) and also do an honest assessment of whether your “germaphobe” tendencies are a preference or a truly life-impeding hurdle. Regardless of your eventual housing solution, it may be that you want to do a little work on learning to tolerate matters not being just to your liking before you leave for school.

Big difference between being a germaphobe and being uncomfortable with a cluttered living situation. Is the bathroom your main/only concern or are there other things about rooming with someone that are potential issues?

Not liking the way people/things smell has nothing to do with being a germaPHobe. For that, you just have to talk to your roommate and ask them to wear deodorant, or get some kind of scented spray you like.

Yes.That is my only concern.

You may be able to get a single, but that comes at a cost. Make sure you specify that you are very neat on your housing app and try to communicate with someone and making sure they are very clean before committing to a roommate. As for bathrooms- communal bathrooms at many schools are cleaned at least twice a day. Suite style is becoming more and more popular, though.
