Dorms

As a parent of a student most likely to join Haverford this fall, I wanted to start a thread inviting those who have been to Haverford to educate us on (a) dorms versus apartments, (b) class selections as a frosh and general life at HC... Thanks

Congratulations to your son or daughter!

My daughter is currently a freshman at Haverford, living in the apartments. Initially, she was disappointed to be assigned there - worried that she would feel isolated and apart from the main campus. I was worried about lack of common lounge/social space for each building.

It turns out that she's had a fabulous year there; the living rooms seem to be common spaces with doors always open and students popping in and out. The walk "up-campus" hasn't been a problem.

The other plus is having a kitchen. The only downside of the apartments as far as I'm concerned, is that the outdoor ambience doesn't match that of the main campus. That doesn't seem to bother D, though, and she hopes to be in the apartments again next year.

Thanks zizzmom. My daughter will be a freshman there this fall, and she actually seemed inclined towards apartments, which is why I thought I will seek the collective wisdom out there. We will be there on April 22 for open house, and will check into it.

On a different note, as a parent, what are your impressions of HC over the last year? Are you happy with what Haverford has had to offer your daughter academically, opportunity, and personal growth wise?

Congrats.

Regarding picking classes, your s/d will have customs people, upper class advisors, faculty advisors, deans and friendly sophomores/juniors/seniors to help out. There is a 1-2 week shopping period for classes at the beginning of each semester, too.
