Dorms

YouTube - Wake Forest University Dorms

The video says how freshmen are just randomly assigned dorms.

But CAN you pick Johnson? I'm straight-edge, so never drinking and smoking has been a part of my life. I'd love to live in a substance-free dorm. And I would assume that since most people don't want to live there, that I have a better chance of getting it if I do request it.

Johnson is the only dorm you can request, and if you request it, I’m almost positive they’ll put you in there. And I’m Mormon, so I kind of pass over the whole drinking/smoking thing as well.

Yes, my friend who attends Wake told me that they do not even have enough students opting for Johnson, so they make a non “Substance-free” wing of Johnson and randomly put some regular kids there.

So, I am sure you would get into Johnson if requested. Anyway hilsa, so is Wake your top choice now?

Yes, Wake is my top choice now. I got into Emory and I know it’s more prestigious, but I don’t really care. Wake is so much prettier. Lots of grass is definitely important to me, and Wake definitely has it!

What about you? Is Wake your top choice now?

Well, I got waitlisted at UChicago, so yes, Wake is probably my top choice. I like William & Mary a lot too; however, their OOS financial aid sucks because it is a public school. Unless a miracle happens and I get off the waitlist from UChicago; I will probably attend Wake.

Sweet!

Yeah, it sucks being waitlisted from your top school. I know that pain hurts a lot. I’m still going to try to get off the waitlist for Vandy, but Wake Forest has definitely become my new feasible favorite. :P

I’d actually choose Johnson because if there’s no drinking/smoking, then it’s probably the cleanest dorm on campus. I mean it’s gotta be, considering that how many people get drunk and throw up all the time. Before I decide tho, I wanna know if there’s anything wrong with Johnson other than being substance-free. anyone knows…?

There is nothing wrong with a dorm being substance-free.

Substance-free dorms are just stereotyped as being boring.

…because people who don’t drink and smoke are automatically boring.

Thanks for posting! I haven’t visited, but got accepted, and it looks like it will be my top too. I am hoping to visit to make sure, but meanwhile these informative posts are helpful! :D

My d was placed in Johnson this year. She was one of the overflow and was initally upset - she did not request it. The dorm is one of the older ones, but is in a great location. According to her, all of the boy halls are made up of boys that picked Johnson, but only one of the girl halls is made up of students who requested it. If you do not request it, you do not have to sign a substance free form. You do have to abide by the no-smoking in the dorm rule -they purposely pick kids that indicated non-smoking on the residence hall info form. Now that she has been there almost a year, she still says she would have rather been in a typical dorm, but appreciates the smoke free environment and quiet hours at night.

Both of my parents went to Wake Forest & I stayed in the dorms during basketball summer camps a few times. Unfortunately I do not remember the name of the dorm I stayed in - however we had huge mosquito problems the duration of the camp. They assured us it would be fixed but it never was. This caused me to wish to never return to the WFU dorms!

HOPEFULLY you all will have better experiences.

D was in a Wake dorm for a summer term last year and didn’t have any mosquito problems.

I’m in Johnson, and I think it’s awesome. You really become close with the people in your dorm, and, as some of you have mentioned, it’s generally clean and quiet. Wake up 5 minutes before your 9AM class in Tribble? You can make it in three. Main quad is right in front. There’s a slight negative party stereotype thing going, but it’s not really a big deal even if you do want to party.

You’ll get in Johnson if you want to be there. There is a wing of girls who did not request it, and, sorry to say, can be sometimes sour about it (perhaps understandably). But everyone who registers for it does so for a reason, and it’s pretty much an invariably great experience.

Any questions about student life, academics, move-in, dorms, etc. feel free to PM any of us students; congratulations to everyone accepted!!!

Do you think there is a big chance that, since I’m a girl, I might dorm near the group of girls that did not select Johnson?

I’m just a big fan of sleeping and don’t want annoying, screaming girls near me. I had to deal with that this summer at this Vanderbilt science program. I’ve been cynical about my own gender even since!

Yeah, I would expect Johnson people to bond really well, since we’d make friends while actually being sober. Haha. I think the best way to make friends is a good game of Apples to Apples!

Thanks for the advice, TAce!

That’s really great hilsa that you assume anyone who did not select to live substance-free is going to be “annoying, screaming girls”. If you really think that’s what most wake kids are going to be like, I have to wonder why you would want to come here anyway?
