Is anyone considering?

Is anyone considering doing the sub-free living at Wake? I think I'll probably wind up doing that to avoid a roomate vomiting in my room at 3 am in the morning :P

holy crap this is like the weirdest thing... I was actually just about to post on that exact thing. Yea, i am seriously considering bc i am allergic to cigarette smoke (and the same reason as you too!). One of my friend's roomy has already thrown up twice in his room (soo nasty). The only thing i was worried about were the amount of freshmen. I think that most ppl know those on their hall best so i would want to be with new students for the most part. Is johnson mostly freshmen?

I was thinking about doing sub-free housing at Wake too.

As someone who thought about doing sub-free and decided against it, I would DEFINITELY recommend doing it, even if you're on the fence right now. I don't drink but I have a roommate that likes to party and come back drunk and loud at 3-4 am on weekends, the same thing the vast majority of my hall does...kind of annoying, to say the least. And being woken up by the sound of vomiting is horrible, honestly.

I don't really think there's much of a stigma or stereotype associated with the Johnsonites (that's what I was sort of afraid of...getting a biblethumping roomie or something or making people look at me funny because I lived there). But everyone I know in Johnson is pretty cool, and I have a lot of good friends that live there. If I could do it over again, I definitely would've requested Johnson. And BTW, yes...Johnson is all freshmen (well, except for the RAs and RTA of course.) I think there's a specific hall in one of the upperclassman dorms for upperclassman sub-free. But that problem usually solves itself, since you can pick your roomate sophomore year, and I would think that people probably self-select people that have the same drinking habits as they do.

I think more females tend to request sub-free than males do (the third floor male side isn't sub-free because there weren't enough guys that requested it), so if you're female, turn your form in early...because I know a couple girls that couldn't get in this year because they're wasn't room for them.

Thank you so much for the info! It's a big help, especially from someone who is actually at wake... any idea when housing requests and other forms will be coming my way? thanks <3

I'm not sure if I'd want to live in sub-free. I don't drink a lot, I used to when I was younger, but would living there eliminate you from any drinking or partying? I'm a very responsible drinker but I'd be uncomfortable with people puking all over the place and with smoking. Ah I don't know.

Eh, it all depends on who you get paired with. If you fill out the roommate form with the preferences right, you shouldn't have trouble.

Yeah, that's true too...I will say that the vast majority of the time, housing does a good job of matching people up. In fact, I can't really think of anyone other than myself that doesn't get along with their roommate at least tolerably. My theory is that my roommate must have lied on her housing form, because she is pretty much my complete opposite...and I know I was honest with my preferences! I do want to clarify that that's NOT the norm to be matched with someone so incompatible.

WF sends out 3 packets of information over the summer to matriculating students, about one a month. I think the housing info is in the first one.

I've heard of Johnsonites partaking occasionally, but I would be discreet/responsible about it (ie, not coming in falling down drunk or being incredibly loud or obnoxious...)

I lived in Johnson last year, and I never regretted it. There is a substance-free hall for upperclassmen, but I chose to live somewhere else (though my roommate and I both continue to be substance free). What I found best about living in Johnson was that it was a smoke-free environment. Juba is right that some of the people in Johnson do drink moderately occasionally, but pretty much everyone abides by the no smoking rule.

Oh that makes it harder to choose. After living in a place where so many people smoke I'd really like to live somewhere without it.

What are the room sizes like in Johnson?

The rooms are tiny. But Bostwick (another dorm) is an exact mirror image of Johnson, and the other freshman dorm rooms can't be much, if any, bigger, so that's not really a reason to either live in or not live in Johnson. Somewhere, I posted some pictures of my room last year for another student. I'll see if I can find that link.

Found it! http://community.webshots.com/user/ginnyvere I took the pictures just before I moved out last year. They're not terribly good, but they should give some idea. I should also mention that I was in one of the smaller rooms in Johnson.

Thanks a lot. That's what I'm worried about. I have problems with claustrophobia and I'm so afraid of getting a really small room. I think my older brother had a good sized room- I think he was in Babcock first year. I don't really remember.

Yes, the freshman dorms are nothing special, in fact one kid left the tour after he saw the dorms ;) However, I don't think you want to be spending too much time in your dorm room anyway, they aren't designed for that :)

I really hope not. That would be terrible.

well get pumped ya'll bc we might be in the same dorm! hahaha.... ohh my....

I was wondering... are there sinks in the johnson rooms? I need to hear back ASAP! (just kidding).

Nope, no sinks...sorry.
