^^dorms^^

requesting a quad is more likely than not putting you in hasbrouck or townhouses…

didnt even realize there were quads in donlon…

if you request a double you’ll have better odds at landing somewhere social…

I ended up in Low Rise 7, which my freshman year ended up being one of the most social dorms by far IMO, and we had a lot of “dorm spirit” and we had a huge rivalry with Low Rise 6.

I really like Balch (for several reasons)…can I request to be in this dorm? Or, by indicating that I’d prefer a single-sex floor and a single room, am I basically setting myself up to be placed in Balch?

im really not sure if i want to put down balch, considering if i put it down ill probably get it. countryangel, what are your reasons for wanting to enter balch?

i like hanging out with teh guys and have a ton of guy freinds, but i dont think living in balch will actually hinder that. living in a coed dorm might help that but im really not sure which one id prefer. i guess ill just wait to see what the dorms are like when i visit. two weeks until dhw! im excited

I really like the spacious rooms, the community (of course I love hanging out with guys…I just prefer my living space to be female xD), the abundance of single dorms (prefer a single room…I don’t think you need a roommate to be a part of the social scene), and just the overall atmosphere in general that it seems to have. I’ll definitely be taking a look when I go up for Cornell Days.

That being said…I couldn’t find any place on the housing application to request Balch. Am I just overlooking it?

always in the past there has been a way to specifically get in Balch. perhaps it has changed this year? if you want a single sex floor (female, that is) and and single, you’ll probably get Balch anyway.

also…should specify that when ResurgamBell says Balch has washrooms, he means rooms with sinks you share with your next door neighbor. wanted to be sure, cuz I know there are parts of the English-speaking world (Ontario, anyway) where washroom means any restroom, and one would expect to find a toilet in one.

hansbrouck is for grad students and townhouses are a separate choice from quads…will I still be placed in townhouses if I request a quad?

Thanks, faustarp…I’ll look into it and post if I find out anything new.

There are a few quads in Donlon. I lived in one freshman year and I loved it. It’s better than a double because it’s essentially two doubles connected by a central room (which is a great place to host closed-door parties hint hint). Plus, you can move your desks into the central room to make more room in the bedrooms. I had an engineer, architect, and hotelie as suite-mates and I was a premed so we were very diverse.

hey countryangel926 so when you sign up for the housing on the left tab go to part 3, room preference, and the first choice on that page has the women only (Balch) option. hope that helps.

your parents wont know what you request, so to the person who was worried, put single if you want a single. you will not get a single unless its your first choice, since they are limited in availability.

in the dorms, the girls and guys dont share bathrooms regardless. in mews/court the girls live on one side of the hall, and the guys live on the other side of the hall. other dorms have sections of girls and guys.

townhouses are a little bit far, but i know a ton of people that had a great time living in them. a lot of athletes end up there. you will be a bit secluded since their are only 4 of you living in a house. you will have a roommate, but you will have a kitchen and a huge living room.

it is really easy to make friends freshman year though, so i would not really worry about having a double just to make friends. to be honest i dont personally know too many people that were great friends with their roommates. Some got lucky though.

oh, thanks kimie! i was looking at the housing application included in the acceptance package…maybe it would be better if I filled it out online.

no problem. hope all goes well : )

another quick question - is a dorm like Balch popular enough to be hard to get into? is it worth making my deposit and filling out my housing app. asap?

not sure if it’s in high demand but singles in general are highly demanded…

so apply and deposit now!

how are triples? why are they cheaper? are there many triples available? because i haven’t seen much commentary about triples yet. and is the 600 bucks saved living in a triple worth it?

a triple is generally a double with the second bed being a bunk. pretty tight.

Your housing assignment doesn’t depend on when you submit stuff, countryangel. You don’t have a better chance of getting what you want if you submit early–it’s random.

@jcas: unless you were talking about all-freshman dorms (and maybe the dorms on west?), that’s not true about ALL bathrooms being separate for girls and boys in dorms. all risley bathrooms are coed and guys and girls can live right next to each other - which makes for some rather… interesting encounters the first couple of weeks. i think there are also some gender-neutral rooms on west (like… 1 or 2?), and there has also been some talk in the past about a gender-neutral initiative in some of the program houses.

oh im sorry i am not familiar with program houses like risley. i just meant all-freshman dorms. in mews the guys lived across the hall and there would be 2 doubles and a single sharing a bathroom.
