So, I feel like a ton of colleges have the picturesque dorms in plain view and then the box dorms that were built in the 60s hidden in some obscure corner of campus. Does the same thing go for Brown? Also, are there dorms that pre-frosh should be ecstatic/worried about getting assigned to? And lastly, are any campuses more convenient to live on than others? Sorry for all the questions…this is what I’ve been perseverating on lately instead of actually finishing high school first

…we don’t really have picturesque dorms. The housing for freshman is very good for freshman housing. The only problem is that much better as you get older. There’s no dorm to really fear. If you have big problems with noise you may want to avoid keeney. if you have problems with laminate-topped furniture avoid new pembroke! but of course you don’t get to choose (unless you have some kind of disability).

are you already accepted at Brown?

Yep, and I just committed a couple days ago!

Also, you said we don’t get to choose–so the housing lottery is COMPLETELY random? I noticed a housing preference form online but I’m guessing that’s just for upperclassmen. I haven’t received my matriculation materials so I don’t really know yet what we’re supposed to fill out in terms of housing.

You’ll get a very short questionnaire but as a freshman the process is essentially random, so it’s not something to even think about.

Can we ask for a specific roommate, assuming both of us are from the same area?

Nope, roommates are (and should be, in that first year) random. Think of it as a way to attempt to force you to make new friends. Even though, if you’re persistent and go against the spirit of it all, you can only hang out with your friend from home.
