DD took 6 AP her junior year. Now for senior year she does not have too many classes left. Her schedule now has 5 APs and one computer class (she is prospective CS major). She needs 1 more class. The options are to take Ceramic (not sure if she fulfilled art requirements by taking AP Art History class) or AP Psychology. She already took introduction to Phycology from our local cc and got an A. Should she go for AP Psy class at school? How would colleges view this double credit for the same class?
I wouldn’t take the AP Psychology class since she has already taken it on the college level. I’m supersized that your high school would even allow that.
They will allow it and also our school consider AP classes more rigorous than DE classes at cc. She doesn’t need any college credits anymore. She already has more then she can claim.
Many colleges will only give credit units once for equivalent courses (including college intro psychology and high enough AP psychology score). Even if double credit units are given (possibly by mistake), the student could only get subject credit once.
I guess I did not phrase my question correctly. I am not that much concerned with college credit, since she already has more credits she can claim. I am more concerned with class rigor. She does not have more rigorous classes to take at school to match her junior year schedule. It does not make much sense for her to take more classes as DE, since again she has a lot of college credits and also some schools one her list will not give any credits at all. Will taking ceramics looks like she is slacking her senior year? Or something like TA?
If there’s nothing else to take, then there’s nothing else to take; just make sure the GC explains that on the Secondary School Report. If your daughter wants to take ceramics, it’s fine, but taking AP Psychology will be a complete waste of time in so many ways.
Our school offers 23 AP classes. They will be listed on school profile. She already took 9 and have 5 more scheduled for her senior year. The other AP classes are not the one she wants to take, like AP Language, Studio Art, Music Theory, etc. She would love to take AP stats, but it conflicts with her computer class and she is not willing to do it. She does not want to take ceramics. She will take it if she has to. Someone on cc mentioned that AP Art history might not fulfill art requirements for CSU since they want to see actual art class not art theory class. She will be applying to CalPoly SLO.
I don’t know what to tell you, maybe she could take an art class at a local college?
My D did not take any electives senior year, she took core academic classes in history, math, science and fourth year foreign language as AP or honors and one DE English composition class.
Re: #6, AP art history and CSU / UC requirements
You can check doorways.ucop.edu for lists of qualifying courses.
14 AP classes is more than enough. An additional AP class is not needed for any reason other than intellectual curiosity.
AP Art History fulfills the Visual & Performing Arts (“f”) requirement for CSU.
