Double major across different schools?

Congrats to everyone who was admitted to CMU for the class of 2016!

I'm currently accepted to HSS and waitlisted at CIT. I want to major in international relations (or political science) as well as civil engineering or materials science.

Would it be possible at CMU to double major across two different schools, or even switch schools altogether after I enroll?

For International Relations/PolSci + Civil Engineering? Easier than you think. For Materials Science? I think a bit harder…

Switch schools together: It’s really easy to transfer into HSS. Into CIT… Civil Engineering would be definite possibility provided you take the courses required for it and do well.

Is that just because of the difference in distribution requirements, or something else?

What sort of things would I have to do to double IR and Civil Engineering? (aside from just taking the required courses)

I was in MSE and found I generally had a bit more work than my CivE friends, but there’s certainly enough time to do a double major in another field if you’re good at managing your time. A number of my friends in MSE did double majors in other fields, and almost all of us had at least a minor.

Nah, just the differences in classes. I think MSE is a more difficult major than CivE (from what I’ve heard, at least), but you can definitely double major or at least minor.

Yeah, doing an extra major/minor is SUPER common at CMU.
