Which two should I major in? I want to write on anarchism, and plan on attending graduate school for my Phd.

Double major at Cal in Political Science and Philosophy, or Political Science and Political Economy?

I don’t know much about Cal’s political economy program, but wouldn’t it be somewhat redundant to double major in political science and political economy?

They deal with two completely different sets of questions, and the political economy degree is really flexible. The major requires a fair amount of economics and history classes.

Ah, well OK then.

I’m pretty biased as a philosophy major, so I’ll say that you should double major in political science and philosophy. You’ll be a lot smarter than the average poli sci grad when you’re done!

Are you majoring in philosophy at Cal?

Nah. I’m headed to UCLA.

I was up at Cal for Chancellor’s welcome and they told me that double majoring in L&S majors as a transfer is highly discouraged. They’ll allow it but they want you to prove a strong reason for why a double major is necessary for your career goals.

@CalBruin

Why is it discouraged?

I’m very skeptical about the idea that they actively discourage it, or that you have to have any convincing reason at all in order to double major, let alone one that pertains to a career goal. If you want to double major, and you can work it in so you finish within 5 semesters, noone is going to stop you, or give you a hard time. (Source: more than one L&S counselor)

As a prospective Phil / Rhetoric double major myself, I think you should go with Phil, but thats just because I’m biased :)

@ocnative @Freetofly112 I think they discourage it because some people can’t finish on time. We know that people do it so it’s not like transfers aren’t allowed to double major, I was just told by L&S to seriously consider whether I really needed a double major.

@CalBruin Ah, I see. Are you planning to double major?

@Derhund12 I kind of agree that majoring in both Political Science and Political Economy is redundant. Even though they are both very different focuses, there are still many similarities in the two. If you want to focus on writing, I would double major with Philosophy. That should prepare you well.

@ocnative I thought about getting a double major in political science and legal studies but as my goal is law school, there really is no reason to get a double major.
