Double major at CAS and Stern?

As a recently accepted applicant to CAS at NYU, I intend to major in Economics. But I also wanted to know if it's possible to double major in Economics at CAS AND also Finance at Stern? I'm not really sure if it's do-able, but it's definitely something I'm incredibly interested in. I don't want to transfer into Stern because I'm not interested in fulfilling all the core business requirements, I just want to do a Finance major. I'm not entirely sure how things at Stern work though.../how competitive things like this could be.

Thanks so much! Any help would be appreciated :)

If you go to Stern, you can double major with a CAS program, but not the other way around.

Also, CAN do CAS Econ along with a Business Studies minor from Stern.

If you want to do Finance, you’ll just have to Internal Transfer.

Not only can you not do so as giantmidget already pointed out, the “Finance major” is a culmination of the core business requirements on top of the electives… so your request makes no sense. If your sole goal is to get a job in finance as it seems to be, then just major in CAS econ and recruit as such. You’ll be competing for fewer spots, but have less technical interviews.

Thanks! What is the statistical likelihood of an internal transfer from CAS to Stern being possible?

It’s difficult, but possible if you manage extremely high grades.

Another related question: what is the difficulty of maintaining a high GPA at a place like NYU? How would you rate the easiness of classes? What about for Stern specifically?

For internal transferring, I think the major you pick makes a lot of difference. My friend was in CAS, majoring in Computer Science. He tried to transfer as an Information Systems major, which is supposedly one of the least popular majors at Stern, and once he was accepted, changed his major to a double in Finance and Econ.

@aangel42 - Easy, and Easy. Stern classes aren’t that hard… I never understood why people insist they are… I guess to give others the impression that they got great GPAs despite the “adversity” /shrug. I honestly found it harder to get As outside of Stern because B+/A- seemed to be my bar in the humanities classes.

Opposite question - I was accepted to Stern.

Can I do a second major at CAS, in a science field?

Yes you can take a second major in CAS - I’m not sure about the science field part. AFAIK it’s allowed, but the number of credits required will probably be brutal and you’ll have to manage your schedule carefully so you don’t put yourself in a position where you can’t fulfill all your reqs in 8 semesters. From what I can remember, even a softer second major like Psych eats up almost all of your non-Stern elective credits.

Thanks! Does anyone know who I can email/talk to at Stern about this? I couldn’t figure out who exactly I should contact.

Any of the guidance counselors will be able to help you out. They usually know what’s up - though take any opinions and suggestions with a huge grain of salt.
