Hello:) Okay so I'm deciding between UCB and UofRochester (less known but still an amazing school all around). Of course, UCB is closer to home, warmer, and rated higher, but I'm wary of competition and grade deflation. Even more, although I want to be MCB major, would it even be possible to double major in something outside of the sciences? I love writing, math, language, music, etc, and don't want to be restricted from academically pursuing them at university. Really the only things that have me not choosing UofR are the fact that it's not as well known and the weather is ridiculously cold (I'm from Southern California and I fear the cold). Should these be enough to sway me towards Cal? Would I go crazy attempting to study outside of MCB? is that even possible?? Thanks for any help!

MCB requires 15 courses (17 courses for biological chemistry). Most other majors require 12 to 15 courses (e.g. 13 for math, 15 for Spanish, but music needs about 18 because most of its courses are 3 units instead of 4 units).

Since a typical eight semester schedule includes about 32 courses, two majors can fit in, but you need also to complete reading and composition and L&S 7-course breadth (although two majors could cover much of that). AP credit may cover some frosh-level requirements for some majors, reducing the number of courses needed.

Note that if you are pre-med, majoring in biology is not required; you can major in anything, as long as you take the pre-med course work.

Thank you! I was admitted as an undeclared biology major, so would I be allowed to major outside of biology in addition to MCB? By the way, I’m not pre-med (or at least not in terms of medical school)

You’re definitely allowed to, just know that your schedule will be full nearly every semester.

All L&S frosh enter as undeclared. You can choose any L&S major(s) you want, if you meet the prerequisites (a few majors do require a higher than 2.0 GPA in the prerequisites to declare). The selection of major on application for L&S students probably just affects advising you see at CalSO and the like.

You can explore the majors and their requirements here: http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/major/majorlist.html

Don’t forget overall L&S requirements: http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/requirement/summary.html

If you plan to double major, you may have to carefully make sure that each course you select meets some requirement (possibly more than one where the majors may overlap with each other or L&S breadth requirements) so that you can get both majors and other L&S requirements into your eight semesters.

I am a MCB Major in my 2nd year who is minoring in Art and also taking business classes. You should study outside of MCB as well. You need variety in your course load and it’s definitely possible.
