I was reading about majors on the UW website and it says this regarding Double Major or Double Degree:
“Graduating from UW with a double major or double degree is comparatively rare.”
This statement is here:
https://www.washington.edu/uaa/advising/academic-planning/majors-and-minors/overview/
How should that be interpreted? Are they saying that most people don’t do a double major or it is virtually impossible to do one? Not enough time? Hard to get classes?
My D really loves UW and Seattle but we keep on running into little tidbits that I can’t tell if are real issues or not. She would be majoring in Psych there - a major that no one gets DA into - there are some courses to take before you apply. Not so worried about that (ha, maybe should be). Wants to double in Linguistics. But don’t understand the statement about double majoring above.
It most likely means that most students graduate with one major, while some add one or two minors, and a smaller number add another major or degree. The extensive presentation on that webpage about double majors and double degrees suggests that it is not impossible. I recommend that you ask the departments for more information about double majoring in psychology and linguistics.
It’s taking him five years, but a friend’s son is triple majoring. He came in with a number of AP credits. It’s unusual in that the graduation requirements for the single degree do not leave a lot of room for a second set of courses unless you are willing to overload.
^ Impressive. A friend’s D from CA is graduating in three years with a major and a minor (along with interdisciplinary honors, which has its own set of requiremens). Major and minor is probably a lot more common, given the general graduation requirements.
Hi! This is really late, but from my research I’ve found that you can double major and meet grad requirements because the first major can overlap with your Areas of Knowledge/GEs 15 credits but the second major can overlap any number of credits.
