Double Major in College of Biz + major outside of that

Hey all,

As of now, I'm going to be attending UIUC's College of Business next fall. i was just curious as to whether it is possible to major in... say... finance and computer science or finance and math.. I really want to make the most of my time at UIUC. Sadly, I've heard from a friend/current U of I student that taking on a 2nd major outside of Biz is near impossible. I do have tons of AP credits, but even so.. i don't know..

What do you guys have to say?

Thanks!

I was wondering about Double Major, too! Mine would be in Communications & Marketing if it’s possible

I will answer the second question first. If you are in Communications you will not be permitted to double major in marketing. The business college does not accept any applicants for double majors from the other colleges. On the other hand, those other colleges accept double majors from other colleges including business.

As to the first poster, what you suggest is possible. The real issue is whether it is practicable. Every year many hundreds of the new freshman show up with egos blaring and the confirmed belief they will double major, and then by the end of the second year (when you actually apply for the second major) almost all of them have come to their senses and stick with one major. Engineering is always a telling example because by junior year the number who actually end up pursuing a double major is usually single digits or zero.

That you will have a lot of AP credits raises the possibility somewhat. But a second major, particularly one that does not have large overlap with the one you have adds a lot of required coursework to your normal usually heavy schedule in the business college. During freshman and sophomore year, besides taking courses you need in your own college, you must also take any courses freshman and sophomores usually take in the other college for the desired major. Gen ed courses usually meet the Gen ed requirements of both colleges so that is not a major issue. But courses in a major such as computer science or math adds a lot of hours to the total you usually need to complete, probably 35 and maybe 40 meaning you are looking at adding a year or more to your schedule. Also, you can easily face conflicts that you usually don’t have to worry about with one major – you may find that a course in one major that you must have in a semester because it is a prerequisite for ones you need to take next semester is given only at the same time as a course you must have in the same semester in the other major.

Also, a second major is something you officially begin junior year and apply near end of sophomore year (although you need to start talking about it with your counselor in freshman year). The new college and department has to accept you and that is not guaranteed.

In essence, a double major is a possibility but don’t expect it to be easy.

Thanks drusba. I’ll keep that in mind

I’m a freshman, I came here with 47 ap credits (I’m done with all my geneds, basically), and I still wouldn’t want to double major. I probably don’t have as good of a work ethic as others, but it’d still really be a pain, even if I was very intelligent/hardworking.

What’s your major?
