Double Major in Philosophy and Human Service with Minor in Business Administration

Hello,

This is my first post here on CC, but I have read a good number of articles that have been posted in the last few weeks. I am currently a Junior with a 3.9 GPA, a 32 ACT (first try), a lot of leadership experience and skills, 300 plus hours of service, and would be graduating with seven or eight AP classes.

I am looking to go into the Nonprofit world. I have a passion for helping others and I am really good working with groups. I am looking to Double major in Philosophy and Human Services with a minor in Business Administration at Loyola University Chicago. My question is, do these majors make sense for the job I want to pursue. If anyone has any information in the NFP world, about the majors, or about Loyola let me know. Thank you very much!

Non-profit as in participating in the NP’s vision and outreach (what the NP actually does), or non-profit as in participating in the NP as their business?

NPs and NGOs do a lot of different things, and typically there is no specific major to look for unless you were thinking about a specific NGO to get into (i.e. a Environmental Studies/Science degree may be preferred by a specific NGO that deals with environmental causes).

An interesting way to start, if you are in good health to travel and be in some remote places, is the Peace Corps. I’ve viewed their website a lot before and they accept appliants in a variety of majors for positions such as teaching english (English-type majors), helping build local agruculture (Environmental Studies/Science, or Biology/Chemistry-type majors), or assisting remote communities run more efficient markets and businesses (Business/Economics-type degrees).

I would suggest to search for what interests you more, and just stick with that and look into how that can fit you into the NP world after that - unless, like I mention, you are looking into some specific NGOs.

EDIT: So if you are looking more into wanting to start or “run” an NP, then Business-type majors would help you the most.
