Double Major in Physical Education and Art Education?

I know that both Physical Education and Art Education do not have much in common (if anything), but I love both health fields and Art fields. I figured as a teacher I could either use my P.E. degree to be a teacher and then my free time using my Art degree for freelance stuff, or be an art teacher and use P.E. in the summers as a personal trainer or something. I would like to know if double majoring in these two fields is an okay idea or if it is absurd. I love both fields so much and I figure that the amount of jobs I could get with an art degree are more plentiful than with a P.E. degree, so if I had to chose only one degree, I would pick Art. I know that the amount of teaching jobs in both art and P.E. are low but I figured this would double my chances of getting a job teaching something I am passionate about. I am open to every idea and opinion, so please don’t hold back. I need all the answers I can get.

They do have one thing in common: Schools tend to have only one or two of each. Anyone who ever wanted to be a pro athlete defers to Phys Ed; anyone who ever wanted to be a less-than-starving-artist to Art Ed. (Along, of course, with all those people who chose those paths because it’s what they actually wanted to do.)

If you’re trying to hedge your bets at hiring time, look at literacy or math or science or ESL… something that’s more in demand and will make your application stand out.

That said, if they’re your passions, who am I to dissuade you?

Good luck!

Math and science are not my strong suits lol. I like biology and anatomy for science but that’s about it. Do you know of other jobs I could get with an Art ed degree? Could I work as a concept artist or designer if I could prove I had the talent?
Also, thanks!

You’re welcome, speak to the art teachers at your high school. And speak to the Assistant Principal, he or she may have some insight on what they’re looking for when they hire.

And maybe consider animation?

Sorry, I teach math… this is so NOT my forte.

I’d be careful with Double Majoring. You’ll have more courses to do because you are preparing for two teacher certifications. Some schools may not even allow it because of the clinical experience requirements (mine is one of them, and we offer both those degrees). But if you’re really passionate about teaching in more than one area, chose the one you’re most passionate about first, then go for the other one later.

Perhaps you can major in art education and take some electives that would qualify you for coaching. Many schools like the idea of having teachers other than gym teachers work as coaches. At our hs, a history teacher coaches track, a math teacher coached field hockey and the like. This might get you some added traction on interviews.
