I was wondering, does anyone know if it is possible to do a double major at NYU? Can one choose to get a BFA in MT and get a BA from another department/school (i.e. Communications, Business, Journalism)? Also, is it possible to do this at any other "top tier" type school (i.e. CCM, CMU)? I know that it is possible at UMICH and Baldwin Wallace, but I am not too sure about other places (i.e. Elon, OCU, IU, Syracuse). If anyone had any knowledge on this, I would REALLY appreciate it! Thanks so much!!

CCM does not allow a double major – too many hours in the conservatory program.

Despite what they may tell you, few schools can stop you from taking classes outside of the theatre department. You may need to fill the criteria of the other department, but by and large that isn’t as difficult as getting into the MUSTH program. The real question is time. And no BFA program gives you much free time. If you are an exemplary student who has amazing time management skills you might be able to do it, but expect it to take extra semesters either during the summer or tacked on at the end.

Good luck.

Regarding Syracuse: it is possible to do a double-major, depending on what your second major is. My D has a classmate who doubled theater and biology. However, as kjgc mentioned, the BFA program is extremely demanding. My daughter was in the MT at Syracuse, and was also in the honors department. Between her class schedule and rehearsal schedule, it was extremely difficult for her to schedule extra classes. I would suggest that if you feel that strongly about a double major, you should look at BA programs instead.

We looked into double-majoring also, and found there are two major stumbling blocks:

Time. And it’s not just about time management. Because each class of MT only admits 10-20 students, naturally, they will take their classes pretty much together, in order, and so the times your MT classes are offered will be limited. So for instance, classes like Beginning Jazz may only be offered fall of freshman year with everyone else. You can’t really take Biology instead and then make up Jazz later, because it’s not offered in the spring. They have moved on. I know all schools are different…but I think you really would need to lay out your four years in advance and see how it would play out.

Delayed Graduation. The small MT class will all graduate together. Then you stay an extra year (or two) and finish your second degree. Now you are one (or two) years removed from your training…and one (or two) years older. That could be a serious disadvantage…

Anyway, that is why my S has decided to get his BFA MT degree from a school with a core cirriculum (not a conservatory). These programs are harder to find (lots of research in course catalogs tells the real story), but he will have that two-years of core classes (math, science, language). If he decides to return to school after seeing where his performing career leads him, he will not have to start all over. Two more years, and he will have a teaching or business degree… hope that helps.
