So I want to go into molecular and cellular theory but I absolutely LOVE music. I've been playing the violin since I was four, and I've switched to the double bass like 1.5 years ago and I like it a lot better than the violin and I found out I have talent for it as well (I have a great teacher and I'm principal bassist in all the orchestras I've been in).

The question is... do I double major the Bio/Music or should I do a bio major, music minor? I want to go to a good medical school and a lot of my seniors who got accepted to the Ivy League med schools all double majored (some double majored and did a minor).

Med schools do not care whether you have one or two majors or major/minor or major /double minor, etc. They care about how you did in school GPA wise.

Check out links below on SDN from adcoms and/or very well respected posters on SDN. You’ll notice a trend. (ie. Med schools don’t care)

Majors (and minors) are a personal choice. They have no bearing on our view of an application. This choice only affects an application if it also affects your gpa or performance on the MCAT.

Having a double major or some minors will not make you a more appealing med school candidate to adcomms. Having a high GPA will make you make you more appealing. Add the double major if you wish to have access to classes that excite you, but for which you otherwise could not register, however don’t think that taking more challenging classes and getting Bs or lower in them is going to do you any favors.

@bopper okay, thanks! do you know what a music minor is like? I mean I still have 2 years left and I JUST decided I wanted to continue music so I’m not as familiar with the music department as I am with biology or mathematics;;

I have pretty good ears but my sightreading is horrendous… should I start focusing on getting it better? I learn everything by ear first and then I start picking out the small things in the music but yeah my sightreading is pretty bad.

I agree with bopper suggesting you to minor in music. As far as what the music department is going to want, that may be very different depending on your school. I suggest that you first look up the minor requirements for a music minor. Biology majors at my school aren’t even allowed to minor but I’d guess it’s not common for departments to work that way. You may or may not have much freedom as to which courses you can take to satisfy the minor depending on your department. You can contact some music faculty or the professors of music class(es) you are signed up to take and ask if there’s anything you should do to prepare or if the course isn’t going to require students to already demonstrate a high level of ___. You should also look up syllabi for the courses you are considering too so you can have a better feel for what they are over.
