I'm another med school hopeful who doesn't know who to believe. I have been talking with my advisor since my senior year in high school, and his advice was to major in whatever you like, and or are passionate about. The first major that came to mind was music, I love music. Well, after he told me this he hands me a four-year pre-medical cirriculm plan. On that plan the major is Biology and the minor is Chemistry. He told me that that set up would make me the most competitive and would really prepare me for med school. I like the Biology, but I'm not so sure that I like the chemistry. Finally to my question. Do you think it would hurt my chances if I major in Biology and minor in music? Like instead of taking some of the upper level bio classes or chem classes I work on a minor in music or possible double major Biology/Music. What do you think? Thanks in advance.

the beauty of being a premed is that you can major and minor in whatever you want! As long as you take the required prerequisite courses such as: 1 year of bio, physics, chem, organic chem, and math (for some schools) you are a premed and can apply to medical school. This has been talked about everyday on these boards. Do what you love right now, you will be taking science courses anyways after college. :)

I would LOVE to major in music, it's just that I'm afraid to mess up and not be "as" competitive. It's that whole I can't mess up in anything pre-med mentality. By the way, what is covered on the MCAT? I know the sections, what I mean is how advanced? Will advanced chem, bio, physics, etc. be covered? Or will it be just the pre-med requirement classes?

From what I heard, the only material from Organic chemistry is the nomenclature material. However, Biochemistry is a good class that links together much of the MCAT material (at least the biological sciences part).
