Does anyone know if it’s possible to
double major with Theatre and Film
Production at LMU?
Double major is feasible, will you bring in any transfer credits? Not much overlap so may have some overloaded semesters. In reality both majors require lots of extra time outside of course load. Film majors worth their salt spend most weekends on set. Minor in one?
@jtmoney No I won’t be bringing any transfer credits. It seems like I would have to minor.
If you want to succeed in Film, it will be two full time jobs. Just taking the classes will get you no where unless you have an uncle who is a hollywood exec. I cannot see how you can have another major or even minor with film. How to succeed in film? Starting in your Freshman year, volunteer for EVERY job you can with Sr. film students. Start out making coffee and emptying trash. Watch and learn. Intern during the summer with indie movies or corporate videos. Again, you will start out making runs to Starbucks to get coffee. By the time YOU are a senior, you will have learned a lot and will have worked up from the bottom. THAT is what the industry wants to see.
LA is full of actors and film students waiting tables. When you talk to them, they spend their summers between school years bumming in Europe, working as lifeguards, or doing ‘fun’ jobs. When you talk to film students who have jobs in the industry (assuming they did not get a job from a relative), they did the dirty work to learn from the ground up.
A film degree by itself is essentially another worthless liberal arts major. A lot of work and expensive… and worthless. If you treat it like a trade, that is start a the bottom and work hard, you have a chance.
Hint: Get organized better than all the other interns. Be a wiz at your computer. Learn Excel and a simple Accounting program. Learn how to do simple construction… cut a board, drill a hole, use hand tools. Likely, that will be among the first thing you are asked to do on a set, assuming it is not a union shoot.
