Double Major?

Hi. I Was planning to Double Major wtih Combination of Philosophy and Political Science or History or Pyschology. Is it possible to graduate in 4 years if you double major, and take a quarter to study abroad?

I'm in the same situation as you are in. I want to 2x major in philosophy and something more bio/med/health related. .. and study abroad. . . i actually won a uc study abroad tshirt in a raffle today. the uci people told me it won't take longer. . . but that's uci..and the girl i asked didn't seem very knowledgible. she had too many "ummmmm. let's seeee"

Depends.

You need 15 upper-division courses, not counting lower-division (Freshmen-Sophomore) major prep, for each major. 3 from philosophy can come from a related major (like political science) with a petition, but not vice-versa.

So in total you must finish 27 upper division courses plus your general ed and lower division major requirements. GE and major prep length depend on how many AP classes you took during HS along with your specific college’s GE requirements. The typical Muir student would take 2 years while the typical Revelle student might take 2.5 years, if you where to pack all lower division courses together.

Assuming you take a full load every standard quarter, it would take 4.25 to 5 years to complete all your undergraduate requirements. With Summer school you could drop it to 4 to 4.25 years. This assumes you don't change majors, always take a full load of classes, don't fail a class, don't study abroad, don't drop a course, don’t transfer, don’t take graduate level courses, and don't take a course that is less than 4 units.

The majority of people I know who double major plan to stay an extra quarter or two, but if you plan wisely it can be done in 4 years flat.

in muir, it may be possible. (lowest GE requirement out of all the other colleges)

what about erc if i do russian literature and russian and soviet studies?

Sorry I'm not too familiar with that major.

But for ERC's gen ed expect the following:

Six course ERC-specific history series
Two fine art courses
Four foreign language courses
Two Math courses
Two Nat Science courses
Three courses (two upper-division) specializing in a geographic region (this probably would count for your major ONLY if you double major or take on a minor)

Assuming you have AP credit for 1 math course, 1 Natural science course, 1 language course, and 1 fine art course. You're looking at 16 lower division gen ed courses. Adding your major prereqs you are looking at two years to complete all lower-division req, more if you dont have that many AP courses.

All majors will be around 15-18 upper-division courses (2X for your double major, assuming no overlap) plus ERC's upper-division writing requirement. That should take about 2.5 years to finish.

The average student takes about 16 units (4 courses) per quarter, 3 quarters a year. Durring summer students usually take 0-1 courses but it's not unheard of for ambitious students to take 2.

how about for a Reveller to double major in Philosophy and Psychology?
